Three things you can do at home this week to reduce the risk of a fall 👇

1️⃣ Check the footwear. Backless slippers are one of the most common causes of trips at home. A pair with a back strap and a non-slip sole makes a real difference.

2️⃣ Walk through your home with fresh eyes. Look for loose rugs, trailing cables, and areas where the lighting is poor especially on stairs and in the bathroom.

3️⃣ Try a simple balance exercise. Standing on one foot while holding the kitchen counter is a great start. Just 10 minutes a day builds real strength over time.

Small changes, consistently made, have a significant impact. We've pulled together a full home safety checklist (printable!) and much more in our free guide.

⭐️ We’re pleased to be attending this year’s Peasedown St John Dementia Awareness Conference ⭐️

At Abney & Baker, we believe dementia support should go beyond reactive care. It should help people stay connected, confident and supported in the community for as long as possible.

This year’s conference theme, “Creating a dementia friendly community,” is one we strongly believe in. Dementia affects not only the person living with the condition, but also families, friends, neighbours and the wider community. Events like this are so important in bringing people together, sharing practical support and raising awareness of the local services available.

📍 Dementia Awareness Conference
📅 Tuesday 19th May
🕙 10am – 3pm
📌 St John’s Church, Church Road, Peasedown St John, BA2 8AA

This is a free event, featuring keynote speakers, information stalls, networking opportunities and a range of local organisations who support people living with dementia and their families.

We’ll be there on the day with some freebies, and we’d love you to come over and have a chat with us. Whether you work in care, support someone living with dementia, or would simply like to learn more about creating a dementia friendly community, this is a valuable event to attend.

We look forward to seeing many local organisations, families and community members there.

Did you know that 1 in 3 people over 65 has a fall at least once a year? 🤔

Most of us don't think about fall prevention until after something has happened. But by then, confidence is often already dented and regaining it takes much longer than preventing the fall in the first place.

The good news: the majority of falls are preventable. Loose rugs, poor lighting, the wrong footwear, certain medications, and simply not drinking enough water are all factors that can be changed.

We've put together a free, practical guide to falls prevention - covering everything from simple home tweaks to the exercises that build the balance and strength people need to stay safe and confident at home.

Hallways and stairs are some of the most used areas in the home, but they can also become hidden safety risks.

Loose rugs, poor lighting, clutter, and obstacles can increase the chance of trips and falls, especially for older adults. Making these spaces safer can help improve confidence, prevent accidents, and support independence at home.

A few small changes can have a big impact on everyday safety.
Keeping hallways and walkways clear, well lit, and free from trip hazards is a simple but important step in making the home safer.

These everyday spaces are easy to overlook, but they play a big part in preventing falls and helping people move around the home with more confidence and independence.
If you’re concerned about safety at home for yourself or a loved one, call us on 0333 430 4880 or email enquiries@abneyandbaker.com to find out how we can help.
