Supporting your body, mind, and emotional wellbeing isn’t a luxury -
it’s the foundation of staying independent at home for longer.
At Abney & Baker, we believe in preventative care, not just reactive care.
Because small, consistent actions today can prevent bigger challenges tomorrow.
Whether it’s nutrition, movement, connection, or routine - it all matters.

Most people don’t realise this…
Poor nutrition is one of the biggest hidden causes of decline in older adults.
It often starts small:
➡️ Eating less
➡️ Skipping meals
➡️ Drinking less
But over time, it can lead to:
• Weight loss
• Muscle weakness
• Falls
• Hospital admissions
And once that decline starts - it’s much harder to reverse.
The reality is:
Good nutrition isn’t just about food. It’s preventative care.
It’s one of the simplest ways to help someone:
✔ Stay stronger for longer
✔ Maintain independence
✔ Avoid unnecessary care needs
If you’re worried about yourself or a loved one not eating or drinking enough, don’t ignore it - early support makes all the difference.

As we get older, staying connected becomes more important than ever.
But for many of us as we age, social circles get smaller…
Less interaction can quietly lead to loneliness, low mood, and even physical decline.
What many people don’t realise is this:
Social and emotional wellbeing isn’t just about companionship - it’s a key part of staying healthy and independent at home.
Regular connection can help:
✔ Reduce loneliness and depression
✔ Keep the mind active
✔ Support overall health and wellbeing
Sometimes, it’s the small things that make the biggest difference such as :
a conversation, a shared activity, or simply knowing someone is there.
If you’re worried about yourself or a loved one becoming more isolated, early support can help prevent further decline.

Last week at our Social & Skills Club (18th of April), we had a lovely time coming together for some Easter Bingo 🐣
There was plenty of laughter, friendly competition, and lots of fun as everyone got involved. Remembering how important socialising is not just for enjoyment, but for boosting wellbeing, building confidence, and creating meaningful connections.
Moments like these make all the difference 💛
If you or someone you support would like to be part of our Social & Skills Club - we’d love to welcome you along! ❤️

Behind every great care team there is time to reflect, learn, and support one another.
Our supervision and team meetings aren’t just a formality - they’re a space for carers to share experiences, raise concerns, and bring forward new ideas. It’s how we continuously improve, together.
Because when our team feels supported and heard, the care we provide becomes safer, stronger, and more personal for every client.
Continuous learning is part of our commitment. If that’s the kind of team you’d like to work in, get in touch. ❤️

Coming home from hospital should feel like a step forward. But for many families, it can quickly lead to another hospital visit. In our experience, it’s often not because anyone has done something wrong, it’s simply that home wasn’t quite ready yet.
If your loved one is currently in hospital, it helps to start thinking about support before the discharge date is confirmed.
Having the right support arranged ahead of time can make the move home feel calmer and safer. It also helps prevent small issues from turning into bigger setbacks.
If someone you care about is in hospital right now, we’re always happy to help you think ahead so coming home feels safer and less rushed. ❤️
Our Social and Skills Club event, Easter Bingo, is taking place tomorrow! Pop on down to That meeting space for a chance to win some prizes!

Looking after cognitive wellbeing does not have to feel overwhelming.
Often, the most meaningful changes come from simple routines, gentle encouragement, and the right support at the right time.
At Abney & Baker, we understand that staying well at home is about more than practical help - it is about confidence, comfort, and supporting people to live well every day.
Staying mobile is one of the most powerful ways to protect independence as we age.
Simple strength and balance exercises can reduce the risk of falls and make everyday activities easier.
If you’d like more personalised support, our Prevent+ programme can help you or a loved one improve mobility, balance and confidence through tailored coaching.
Because the best care is helping people need less care.

Often the first signs that someone might need support are small. A few more dishes left in the sink. Unopened post building up. Pausing a little longer on the stairs or when getting out of a chair.
These small changes can appear months before a fall or hospital admission. Noticing them early can make a huge difference.
At Abney & Baker, we believe care shouldn’t start at a crisis point.
Early, light-touch support can help people stay safe, confident and independent in their own home for longer.
If you’ve started to notice small changes in you or someone close to you, it might be the right time for a conversation.

My name is Ian and I’m the founder of Abney & Baker.
As someone who had to find care and support for one of my parents with Parkinson’s and someone who served some time as a director of a major national care chain, I’ve gained unique experience of both sides of the care and support world. I’ve seen the impact of low wages and poor working conditions on staff morale and seen the impact this had on the care that people receive.
During this time, I became convinced that there had to be a better way. A care company who valued and supported its team must be able to provide better care and support to its clients.
The result is Abney & Baker.
From the first day, we have have put treating people right at the heart of every decision we make. Doing better by our employees allows us to do better by clients like you which, in turn, is good for the business.
As a result, I am incredibly proud of how we have built a company that:
scores 97% on independent client feedback (1)
scores 96% on independent employee feedback scores (2)
is amongst Top 20 Home Care Providers in the UK as awarded by homecare.co.uk in June 2020.
has committed to fighting working poverty and has been affiliated with the Living Wage Foundation since the day we started
has staff turnover levels roughly half that of the national average for the care industry
has trained and developed many of our colleagues to become trainers, supervisors or managers
We are family-owned, local and proud of the role we play in our community.
