Removing the ‘What will I be when I grow up?’
Yoga and yogic philosophy is something that I am always using to try to navigate my way through motherhood and family life.
Lately in our family there is a lot of focus on the ‘next stage’ and it’s bought me to reflect on what we do differently.
How do I help my kids not go through the late teens - early twenties sense of dissatisfaction that is so common in our society and that I went through myself.
Ultimately, the idea of having to ‘become’ something is the first and major hurdle to happiness.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Suggests that what they are already is not enough.
We have tried to shift the narrative in our house to “Who are you?” This question calls on a person of any age to reflect internally on what comes naturally to them and what qualities they naturally imbue. When you take away the pressure of having to ‘become’ something in order to be a ‘successful’ adult, you free up huge amounts of energy to use on doing the things you love and nurturing the roots of who you are. When you do the thing you love without pressure and with the support of your family, with no concept of having to change who you are in order to be worthy as an adult, there is less pressure and less room for dissatisfaction or feelings of worthlessness.
“Who are you?” - “I am a dancer.”
“Who are you?” - “I am an astronaut.”
It changes the narrative in our head. At any age when a person says “I am …” they walk in alignment with that statement. It is easier for a teen to make wise choices if they already identify with who they are as a unique individual.
“I want to be a musician.” Is very different from “I am a musician” the whole psyche reads that very differently. It goes from something that is on the other side of a wall, to something that is already inside us.
Every single person has a very unique set of abilities and gifts. Our doctors and engineers really are already in the making when they are 6 years old, it’s just a natural progression. Let them feel that ease.

Finding the balance…
This first week of September has been a balancing act for lots of people I’m sure. ⚖️
As term starts and there is a general cultural expectation that we all knuckle down to work. 📖
But…The sun came out finally, which makes it hard to sit at a desk, and when you have been putting off any avoidable work until the start of term it kind of throws a big sunny spanner in the works!
As my kids get older I am finding it harder to find the balance. I frequently find I need to be in 3 places at once and we now only manage to sit down for supper together on a Sunday. Not something I recommend, but to support my kids in what they love I’m willing to do it for a while. I’m getting better at making Ayurvedic supper boxes that all of us like, as eating processed food on the go is not really my thing. 🥑🥒🥙
To keep the show on the road I’m being really strict about getting up for morning meditation, pranayama and asana practice. It’s making this time for myself that prevents me from burning out and keeps me thinking clearly and feeling healthy. 🧘🏼‍♀️
To try to keep the balance with home educating, work and me time l’m only teaching one open class a week and seeing early morning clients so I can be back to teach the kids. 👧🏽👧🏽👦🏽

How has your first week back been?
I managed to miss a musical horse rehearsal, fail to get E to a ballet class, turn up to tap class with no tap shoes, and miss the first football and karate session…
I’m sharing with a big smile on my face because we can only laugh. We are only human and we trying to do it all.
🩰🏄🏼‍♀️🐎🏏⚽️🥋
Be kind to your self ❤️

If you are having a similar September and would like help to carve out an hour for yourself and restore your sense of balance then join me on Tuesday morning if you can. X

Have you seen this surfboard? (Although it is quite faded now and looks well loved) It was left along with another smaller white foamy on the road bridge across the stream in Polzeath last night.
If you have seen it, or anyone looking really happy with their new finds please get in touch or take them to BustyMoos or the Tube Station or Surf’s Up or Andy the beach ranger and tell them you are the kind soul who found Tom and Leah’s surf boards. Thank you so so much xx
