What is talking therapy?
In the UK, counselling and psychotherapy are interchangeable terms for talking therapy. Some differentiate them by short-term or long-term work, some by specific or complex issues, and some by how deep-seated the patterns are. Therapeutic talking is a skill that requires years of training and practice to master; ultimately, it is about finding a therapist who speaks your language.
I am a psychodynamic counselling psychotherapist fluent in English, Cantonese, and Hakka, dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusive practices. Additionally, I am a qualified clinical hypnotherapist, incorporating NLP and EMDR, and a relationship therapist trained by the Gottman Institute.
I work with adults, couples, and families, focusing on unconscious processes and their impacts. These may include habits, reactions, feelings, or emotions that affect behaviour, memories, identity, and relationships. Communication is a skill, as the nuances of conversation can influence meaning and interpretation. It is an exploratory skill that fosters understanding, enhances knowledge, and provides emotional release.
Whether addressing a current issue, past trauma, a mental state, a disorder, or simply offering a space to offload thoughts, a talking therapist must be proficient in containment. I am competent and experienced in containment.
I will assist with the processes, call out blind spots, and highlight alternative perspectives. I can help with the difficulties you present, and together, we will work towards the most appropriate solution. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And that step is to reach out and begin the process. It may not be easy, but it will be enlightening.
