More often I meet dissatisfaction in regard to health, safety and hygiene at work. When introducing myself to clients as a H&S Advisor, I feel an immediate wall that is being built between me and my interlocutor.
I often hear: "health and safety, of course we have everything under control." At first glance, you can say ALPHA and OMEGA. In this workplace, everything is at the highest level. There are also those who come out of the dependence that "for a few years nothing happened, and nothing will happen in future either". Super thinking, but is it correct?
Sometimes it takes a few weeks, and sometimes only a few days, till I receive a phone call asking for help in the preparation of H&S documents from the same people who did not need help before. What has changed? Most often these are people who have just been inspected by appropriate institutions checking their workplace whether is safe or if environment there has been an accident at the workplace or on the way to / from work. In such circumstances, clients are keen to back date on H&S documents.
Now I will touch a second very important topic, because the preparation of H&S documentation for a given workplace is time-consuming. It has to be understood that every workplace comes with its own risk and therefore should be tailored and assess accordingly.
Duplicating documentation and, most importantly, risk assessment from the Internet or from a colleague from a similar industry is not the best solution. Each workplace has different hazards or a different route of their occurrence.
Therefore, it is so important that the health and safety advisor learn about the workplace, the type of work performed, the scope of duties, etc.
After fully familiarizing yourself with this information, we are able to prepare tailor-made documentation for a given workplace.
