No room for racism in NI

Bonfires can bring communities together, but there’s nothing cultural about racism, sectarian threats, or putting people’s homes and health at risk. When bonfires are used to intimidate or target minorities, that’s not tradition - it’s hate. We believe true celebration is about respect, safety, and dignity for all.

Advocacy for outdoor education can make a real difference in shaping a curriculum that supports both academic and personal growth.

Outdoor learning is such a powerful tool for education, personal development, and fostering a genuine connection with the environment. It helps children engage with the world in a hands-on way, and can be especially beneficial for neurodiverse learners who thrive outside traditional classroom settings.

Encouraging young minds to understand biodiversity, soil health, and food production gives them lifelong skills and a deeper appreciation for nature. Plus, integrating outdoor learning into the curriculum aligns with so many educational goals, from science and geography to teamwork and mental well-being.

Has your school benefited from training from NIFSA?
Please take part in this review to measure the impact of NIFSA in Northern Ireland.

NIFSA Impact Review

NIFSA has commissioned Beverley McCormick, from the University of Ulster, to conduct an in-depth review of the impact NIFSA has had in relation to outdoor learning since its formation in 2008. I believe NIFSA is at a crossroads. We can continue to chip away at promoting and supporting outdoor learning for schools in Northern Ireland or if we had some assistance from Government we could make monumental leaps ahead. We need the evidence however, to demonstrate that NIFSA has made a difference already. If you have been involved with NIFSA or Forest Schools in Northern Ireland please can you take 15 minutes of your time to answer the questions fully and honestly and we are happy for you to share this with others. Started reading 'The Blackbird's song and other wonders of nature' by Miles Richardson. May is a wonderful month to start such a book. Even walking to the shops can help me take notice and observe the beauty of this world.

Photo 2 shows a 'w**d' on a nearby street. I believe it's red campion.

Let’s get outside!

I am a person with a strong interest in childhood development, mental health and our connection with the natural environment. I am also a mother of two young children growing up in a urban environment and I strive to develop a love of nature in both of them. I have a background in Early Years Education and enjoy camping, cycling and hiking.

This page is to encourage like minded people to share information based loosely around childhood, environmental issues, mental health and how these link to getting outside in a natural environment.
