DLD isn't something that people grow out of, so it exists in adults too.

The problem is that many people thought (and still think) that language needs, such as DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) were something that disappeared as children got older. That is not true. DLD is a lifelong condition.

But because of those beliefs there are no services for adults with DLD. That is slowly changing.

We are also seeing a growing number of adult DLD activists coming to the fore, so things will develop over time. But this won't happen naturally. It needs us to keep raising awareness in every way we can.

So join us on Friday October 17th 2025 in raising awareness of DLD. Theme: 'you can't see DLD.' radld.org

As awareness of DLD increases, more research is happening too.

This paper by researchers in Spain highlights the social and emotional challenges that many young people with DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) face. It makes stark reading, so it is worth noting that there is considerable variation between people with DLD. Some have few challenges.

The conclusion is worth noting:

'In conclusion, this study emphasizes that addressing language difficulties alone is insufficient for children with DLD, as reported by their parents. Instead, it calls for prevention and intervention programs that encompass both language and socio-emotional development. By attending to these interconnected aspects, we can help ensure their long-term quality of life.'

So let's focus on children and young people's social and emotional well being, as well as their language.

It's open access so free to read.

Love this from Elklan! 5 really simple things that we can all do as parents!

5 things to do to improve communication with your child 🧡

1. Be an Active Listener: Give your full attention when your child speaks. Show interest in what they're saying, and ask open-ended questions to encourage more conversation.

2. Create Daily Conversation Time: Set aside moments during the day for dedicated talk time with your child, where you can discuss their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

3. Use Clear and Simple Language: Tailor your communication to your child's age and understanding. Keep instructions and explanations clear, concise, and age-appropriate.

4. Be Patient and Encouraging: Children may need time to express themselves. Be patient and offer positive feedback to boost their confidence in communication.

5. Share Stories and Experiences: Share your own stories and experiences to inspire conversation. This helps your child learn and feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts as well.
