Yoga calms the roaming tendencies of the mind. (Yogascittavrttinirodhah; Yoga Sutra 1.2).

“Yoga consists of keeping the mind quiet and wakeful so that one is totally present in what one is doing. Thoughts no longer rush forth of themselves in all directions, but are carefully controlled and directed” from Bouanchaud, B. The Essence of Yoga: Reflections on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, p.5. (Sri Satguru Publications, Delhi 2001).

My own Yoga journey started over 25 years ago. One day, in class, I experienced a profound moment of collected stillness. It clearly demonstrated that whatever Yoga is - it’s not just exercise! My continuing explorations have brought to awareness a whole Universe of ancient wisdom in the practice and study of Yoga - so much more than fitness, flexibility and making interesting shapes.

I practice Yoga every day, and as a result, feel strong and flexible. For me, what’s more interesting is the transformation of my thoughts and emotions. Though a dedicated personal practice, invloving Asana (poses), breathwork (Pranayama) and meditation - in time I’ve developed a calmer mind, as well as a stronger fitter, body.

It also matters less and less how I appear to others. I have become more interested in turning inward to find the genuine me I always knew was in there somewhere, but who had got lost in the challenges life had brought. Any resulting weight loss, lean muscles, quiet mind etc. are no longer the goal of my yoga, but a curious side effect.
