I gave a short talk for the Billericay Parkinson’s disease society yesterday. A really positive and supportive group of people. Such a fabulous resource to have in our community, if you know anyone who lives in this area with Parkinson’s please let them know about it.

Following the success of this month’s course I’m announcing a new date.
Email me on info@neuro-physiotherapist.co.uk for more information

A one day, face to face course in Billericay, Essex, on Friday October 18th 2024

For all therapists (physios, OT’s, osteopaths etc) who are interested in Human Movement.

Working with patients to help them to understand and explore their movement boundaries. Promoting more positive movement patterns, reducing discomfort and improving confidence

There is a slight skew towards neurological disorders and elderly rehabilitation, but it is relevant to all therapists who have patients whose movements are limited through:
• ingrained poor patterns of movement, with reduced awareness of their body
• fear of movement due to chronic pain or falls
• changes to neurological systems (stroke/MS/PD FND etc),

The focus is on human movement and how to improve confidence, through safe and controlled exploration of boundaries.
Helping your patients to:
• Understand their own movement and how/why it is limited
• promote self exploration
• expand their movement boundaries
• experience positive movement again,

The day will include an overview of:
• how altered sensory feedback (eyes, vestibular app, sensation, proprioception) effects ‘normal’ human movement
• How we can direct our patients’ attention to alter sensory feedback, changing how that sensation is perceived
• How state of mind (fear, expectations etc) alters human movement
There will be a large practical element where we will explore:
• Building rapport/trust and leading/following techniques
• Simple use of breath to alter state.
• Self-exploration of own body and altered movement patterns/sensory feedback to gain personal experience of how change happens.
• How to quickly build ‘grounding’ and controlled, safe self-exploration of boundaries to build better movement.
• Patient case studies and discussion of how you can use the treatment techniques with a wide variety of your patients.

£115 (reduced to £105 if booked prior to 1st August 2024.) Approx 6 hours training
Places limited to a maximum of 10 people.
9.30am-3.30pm (registration 9.15)

Some simple stress reduction interventions I regularly use during my treatments:
-Teaching diaphragmatic breathing and how to implement it during both periods of rest and activity. Encouraging nasal breathing where possible.

-Understanding the positive effects of peripheral vision/hearing(seeing/hearing everything and nothing in particular). Looking to the horizon, time outside, walking, standing, or just sitting.

-“Grounding” in standing, sitting or lying … feeling everything and nothing in particular.

-Teaching that these techniques can (and should) be used throughout the day, not just during specific “relaxation “ times of day. Although often we need to practice the techniques before we can carry them into busier/more stressful life situations.

My new assistant. Oscar loves coming to work with me when I have someone who loves dogs and when he can be a useful prop. Today he was fetching a ball and something to reach for, as well as being a big positive in her day.

Scientists found evidence of two interleaved systems, which may help explain the connection between what's going on in our bodies and what's going on in brain areas involved in thoughts and emotions.
