RECRUITING NOW
One of the great things about being with Visiting Angels is the team you have behind you. I was at Head office yesterday in Sheffield speaking with the amazing Nik Dickinson, area development manager, on the subject of recruitment. He talked about the 'many hats' a Registered Care Manager has to wear, and it got me thinking about what being a RCM really means.
Running a Visiting Angels care-at-home business is like stepping into a closet filled with hats of every shape and style — and every day, you wear more than one.
Some mornings, you put on your advocates cap, listening carefully to families’ concerns, helping them feel comforted and supported as they make decisions about their loved ones’ care. A few hours later, you'll trade it for your teacher’s hat, guiding new caregivers, showing them not only how to provide excellent service, but also how to lead with compassion.
There are days when your business hat is front and centre — crunching numbers, organizing schedules, solving problems, and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. Other times, you'll wear your counsellor’s hat, offering a listening ear and calming voice when families feel overwhelmed.
But your favourite hat, the one you return to the most, is the heart-shaped one — the role of encourager, cheerleader, and steady hand for both caregivers and families. Because at the end of the day, Visiting Angels isn’t just about logistics or checklists. It’s about people. It’s about dignity, trust, and showing up for someone when they need it most.
Every hat, every role, every personality you take on is woven together by one purpose: to help others feel safe, cared for, and never alone.
If you've a collection of hats like this in your understair cupboard, take them out. Put them on a hatstand in the hall. By the door. Wear them with pride.
