Cancellations aren’t just frustrating, they’re one of the biggest hidden pressures in the NHS.

Every missed operation means lost theatre time, longer waiting lists, and patients who must rebuild confidence all over again.

That’s why our work with Orpington Hospital Orthopaedics is so important.

By supporting patients awaiting hip and knee surgery with digital prehabilitation, we’re helping more people arrive physically and mentally ready for their procedure, reducing the risk of last‑minute cancellations and supporting smoother recovery.

Better preparation means better outcomes. And better outcomes mean a more resilient elective care system.

With rising demand for orthopaedic surgery, helping patients prepare well has never mattered more.

Digital prehab offers a practical, scalable way to build a reliable pool of “surgery‑ready” patients - supporting better outcomes and more resilient elective services.

This carousel highlights what digital prehab actually does for patients in the weeks before surgery.

Following the launch of our new orthopaedic trial at Orpington Hospital, we’re shining a light on why this work is so important for patients awaiting hip and knee replacement surgery.

Dr Swinda Esprit, Clinical Director for Surgery and Anaesthetics at Orpington Hospital, captured the heart of this initiative perfectly:

“Prehabilitation is not an ‘add‑on’ - it's a critical part of improving surgical outcomes and protecting elective capacity. By trialling a digital prehab model through QuestPrehab, we can support patients to become physically and mentally ready for surgery while reducing last‑minute cancellations. This approach aligns clinical quality with operational resilience, which is exactly what elective services need right now.”

Her words reflect a growing recognition across the NHS: preparing patients before surgery is just as important as the procedure itself. By helping people build strength, confidence, and readiness, we can improve recovery, reduce avoidable delays, and keep elective pathways moving.

This trial is an exciting step toward a more proactive, patient‑centred model of care - one that blends clinical excellence with smarter, more resilient service delivery.

💫 New digital prehab trial launches at Orpington Hospital 💫

Orpington Hospital has begun a new orthopaedic trial using QuestPrehab to help hip and knee replacement patients get truly “surgery ready”.

The patients will use the QuestPrehab app for tailored exercise, nutrition, psychological support and sleep optimisation, all designed to reduce on‑the‑day cancellations, improve recovery and support NHS elective productivity.

The trial aligns with GIRFT, NHS England perioperative priorities, and King’s College Hospital’s digital‑first ambitions, creating a more consistent pool of optimised patients ready for surgery.

As Dr Swinda Esprit said:
“Prehabilitation is not an ‘add‑on’it’s a critical part of improving surgical outcomes and protecting elective capacity.”

This model is set to scale across orthopaedics and other surgical specialties, supporting wider elective recovery.

Spring Clean Your Mind 🌱

Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical conditioning.

Prehabilitation encourages you to build coping strategies early, so you feel more grounded and prepared for whatever comes next.

A few simple practices:
• Start your day with 3 slow breaths
• Write down one thing you’re grateful for
• Set a realistic intention for the week

Spring is a reminder that growth happens gradually and so does resilience.

Move More, Stress Less

Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. In prehab, we focus on building strength, mobility and confidence, all of which support both physical and mental health.

This spring, try:
• Gentle strength exercises 2–3 times a week
• Stretching or yoga to ease tension
• Outdoor movement to reduce stress hormones and lift mood

Consistency beats perfection every time.

Nourish for Energy This Spring

As the days get lighter, your body naturally craves fresher, brighter foods. Nutrition is a core pillar of prehabilitation and it fuels recovery, supports immunity and stabilises energy.

Spring nourishment ideas:
• Choose seasonal produce like spinach, berries, asparagus and radishes
• Stay hydrated; aim for regular sips throughout the day
• Build balanced plates with protein, whole grains and healthy fats

Good nutrition isn’t about restriction. It’s about giving your body what it needs to thrive.
