🦷🌍 World Oral Health Day 🌍🦷

Today, we’re celebrating the importance of a healthy smile and the vital role oral health plays in overall wellbeing.

At Birmingham School of Dental Nursing, we are proud to support patients and communities by promoting prevention, education, and excellent dental care.

Oral Health Facts:
🦷 Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste can reduce tooth decay by up to 25%.
🦷 Tooth decay is one of the most common health conditions worldwide — but it is largely preventable.
🦷 Cleaning between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes helps remove plaque your toothbrush can’t reach.
🦷 Gum disease has been linked to other health problems including heart disease and diabetes.
🦷 Replacing your toothbrush every 3 months helps it clean your teeth more effectively.
🦷 Sugary foods and drinks increase the risk of cavities — especially when consumed frequently throughout the day.
🦷 Drinking water after meals helps wash away food particles and acids.
🦷 Smoking increases the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer.
🦷 Early signs of gum disease include bleeding gums, bad breath, and swollen gums.
🦷 Children should start brushing as soon as their first tooth appears and should be supported up to and beyond 8 years of age.
🦷 Regular dental check-ups help detect problems early, preventing more complex treatment later.

Let’s work together to keep our mouths healthy and our smiles confident!

An amazing achievement for all these individuals.

But a special mention to the fantastic Birmingham School of Dental Nursing they go above and beyond for every single one of their apprentices. They have helped shape the lives and futures of so many individuals.

We are delighted to share that this afternoon, we had the privilege of hosting Prize-Giving ceremony for our Group 64 apprentices. This special event marked the completion of their 18-month journey as they all successfully completed their Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dental Nursing.

It was truly a pleasure to celebrate their achievements and dedication. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to each apprentice and are proud to welcome them into the dental nursing profession.

Today also marked their final day with us, making it a poignant and memorable celebration. We are immensely grateful to Daniel Thompson, our guest speaker, for sharing his journey as a trainee dental nurse through to his current role as Interim Group Clinical Manager for BCHC Community Dental Services and group 2 at Birmingham Dental Hospital.

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to the amazing School of Dental Nursing team who have been invaluable in shaping the apprentices' success.

Once again, congratulations to Group 64. We look forward to seeing all that they achieve in the years to come.

Another one of our fantastic apprentices being recognised for the work and commitment! Congratulations Rees.

Continuing with our National Apprenticeship Week celebrations, we spoke with adult specialist rehabilitation stores administrator Rees James who began working for BCHC in 2024 and started his level 3 business administrator apprenticeship not long after to better himself and his knowledge of his role and the Trust. As he explains:

“My apprenticeship really opened my eyes to how business and financing works within the Trust and I now understand different processes and ways of working, including how to apply Trust policies into what I do. My journey helped me gain a lot of confidence through group discussions and talking to apprentices from across BCHC. Not only this, I was also able to complete my maths and English alongside the course.

“I would completely recommend an apprenticeship with BCHC, I was supported throughout by my tutor and manager and was provided protected time to complete my learning. It's a great course to take and thanks to gaining my qualification, I now have a lot more responsibility and can take on a variety of tasks within my role. I also have a lot more trust in my skills and can now lead on different projects.”

A wonderful event to celebrate our colleagues who have achieved their current qualifications.

The achievements of colleagues who have gained vocational qualifications with support from BCHC's education department were recognised in a celebration event at Moseley Hall Hospital.
Five colleagues received certificates to recognise successful completion of a Level 3 Business Administrator apprenticeship, while six individuals were given certificates for Level 2 qualifications in Maths and/or English.
Director of Education Mark Eaves-Seeley said: “Every one of these colleagues has had to balance their job responsibilities, home life and studies in order to achieve this success.
“It's a big commitment and a massive achievement. We're very proud of every one of them, as they should be proud of themselves.”

Great to see our apprentices being recognised during NAW. And well done Keisha- you were fantastic!

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we spoke with facilities contracts and helpdesk administrator Keisha Johnson who completed her business administration level 3 apprenticeship in 2025.

Keisha joined the apprenticeship programme to gain a qualification, strengthen her knowledge and build a solid foundation for long-term career development, as she describes:

"My apprenticeship has allowed me to grow my confidence while gaining practical knowledge that I can apply in my current job and future roles. I now have a better understanding of how organisations work, particularly BCHC and how my role contributes to the wider picture.

"Throughout my apprenticeship, I was able integrate and interact with apprentices across the Trust, which helped me recognise similarities and differences in our work and learn from each other. My apprenticeship also gave me the chance to take on projects that genuinely interested me and it was rewarding to see the real impact of my contributions.

"I felt supported throughout my apprenticeship journey, not only from my manager, but from my tutor who encouraged and championed me throughout. I would absolutely recommend an apprenticeship with BCHC. It is a wonderful experience and a valuable opportunity to grow, learn and build a career. I'm even considering exploring what other apprenticeships the Trust have to offer so I can continue developing my skills in the future."
