A HUGE thank you to the mystery person who created these lovely Beacon Beanies! Sadly there was no message received with the gift or we would have been sure to thank you individually, but your time and energy are a boon to our community.

Aren't the colours and expressions wonderful? They will be very well received by children and families in our care!

THANK YOU, MYSTERY DONOR 🌼😊

“I loved having time to connect and focus just on one child. It was special for us to have time together.”
“My child is now more open to sharing her feelings with me.”
“Being in a small group with children he can relate to has helped my son become more confident with his own identity.”

📅 Group Sessions: Every Monday 4:15-5pm until 8th December

Does your child get excited and then quickly become overwhelmed? Or, when stressed, do they find it hard to return to feeling calm?

Interoception is the way we know how we are feeling. Sometimes called the eighth sensory system, it involves a two-way dialogue between our brain and body throughout the day. Play can be a really powerful way of helping our children notice what they are feeling in their body and how it changes.

NEW RESOURCE FOR ADOPTIVE / KINSHIP CARERS: Fed up of school not getting it when your child is not fine at school? Dr Naomi Fisher presents helpful strategies: https://www.beaconservices.org.uk/my-child-is-not-fine-at-school-download-video-adoptive-parents/

This recording of Dr. Naomi's popular webinar is available for download with a suggested donation of ÂŁ10. To celebrate the launch of this brand-new resource, we're offering a 20% discount in September on any donation you choose to make! Simply make the donation of your choice then use the code SEP20 at checkout.

NEED A STRATEGY TO COPE WITH SCHOOL NOT GETTING IT?

Your child protests in the mornings, or has meltdowns at hometime. They say they don’t want to go, and you feel torn between their distress and their education. School tell you to perservere and keep pushing your child to go to school. You don’t want to reinforce avoidance or challenging behaviour. You worry that you're not 'getting it right', and it's tough to try to manage the school system on top of caring for your child.

IN THIS RECORDING:

Dr Naomi Fisher, clinical psychologist, explores what often happens when a child of an adoptive / kinship family says they don’t want to go to school. As a parent or carer, you're left feeling like you have to manage the situation yourself.

- Attendance and behaviour: How children show us that things aren’t working at school.
- Common interventions suggested by schools.
- Why these can backfire for adopted children in particular.
- What to do instead.

Dr. Fisher goes through the various ways in which children show their distress, and different causes underlying problems with school attendance. She talks about how this can be especially difficult for adoptive or kinship carer families, and how to navigate understanding your child’s difficulties without misinterpreting the situation. Drawing on her clinical experience, Dr. Naomi Fisher explains how various professional approaches work (or don’t).

After watching the webinar you’ll feel more informed about what’s going on with your child, and better able to make decisions which focus on your child’s wellbeing.

DONATE AND DOWNLOAD - 20% OFF WITH CODE SEP20 AT CHECKOUT

Due to parental demand we are proud to present a BRAND NEW group programme starting in October. Introducing... Connect 4 Young Teens! https://www.beaconservices.org.uk/connect-for-young-teens-group-birmingham/

WHO IS THE GROUP FOR?
Young teens and pre-teens (aged approximately 11-13) can join our therapists for a series of weekly small in-group sessions in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

It's natural for a parent or caregiver to feel worried about how your child will handle the tricky period of becoming a teenager. There's so much CHANGE in the air as a young person starts exploring the potential and pitfalls of becoming a teen. This group provides a safe environment for your child to receive confidence-building therapeutic support along with creative activities in a small social setting.

WHAT'S INVOLVED
Our therapists help your child explore inner change (like identity and outlook) and outer changes (like school, friends, and the pressures of social media) in an engaging way along with young people of a similar age. It's almost like a therapeutic youth club, led by a qualified professional.

IS IT FREE?
There is no cost to you. In fact, we've funded this brand-new services ourselves. We designed this programme of group sessions in response to the needs of parents who have been telling us that support services for young people around this age can be hard to find, even though their child would benefit from support during these transformative years. Connect 4 Young Teens is the result of listening to what parents have told us they want!

FIND OUT MORE
Click the link to find out more and register your child for the Connect 4 Young Teens group programme. We're looking forward to supporting you.

FOR PROFESSIONALS
As we have funded this programme there is no requirement for commissioners to secure funding. You are warmly invited to share this opportunity with parents and caregivers in your care.

Doesn't it feel good to go slow? Charlotte Jenkins explains why slowing down to play helps your child think, learn, and connect - https://www.beaconservices.org.uk/why-slowing-down-to-play-helps-your-child-think-learn-and-connect/

You don’t need to do anything fancy. You don't need to direct the shape of play in a structured way. Just slow down, join their play, and give your child time. There is no right or wrong way to play with a leaf. If your child plays with a tree stump, they can enjoy and learn from the experience whether they climb onto it, count the rings, or sit on it like a king or queen.

Charlotte offers gentle questions and conversational points you can share with your child to help them play with a sense of agency and calming control, feeling safe and connected as they try things out at their own pace.

What happens when a child lies, and should parents be worried? Read our latest blog - https://www.beaconservices.org.uk/why-does-my-child-lie-to-me-a-therapists-advice/

Pamela Meyer, in her TED Talk How to Spot a Liar, says adults lie about twice a day often to protect feelings, avoid conflict, or shape how we're seen.

Children do the same. They’re working out what others know, what’s safe to say, and how to manage fear or get needs met. When a child lies, they are developing their social awareness and learning how to take someone else's perspective. They might be compared with Brer Rabbit, using trickery for protection, not defiance.

For children who’ve experienced relational trauma, who may have been removed from birth families, moved between carers, or had safety threatened, truth can feel dangerous.

Our CEO Charlotte Jenkins offers further insights in the blog along with 5 super-useful strategies to bear in mind when a child lies. After all, what could be seen as a red flag may actually be an opportunity for growth...
