Rheumatologist shares terrifying COVID story with a happy ending

It was a book launch for a book that might never have been written, a joint birthday party for twins who might never have survived their traumatic birth, a celebration of life and love and appreciation made perfect by those who attended to share in the joyful event hosted by consultant rheumatologist Dr Perpetual Uke and her husband Matthew.

Dr Uke – Pep, explained why she felt compelled to share her story in her new book ‘Covid Coma to Twin Birth’ as she celebrated a joint book launch and birthday party for her twins: “I wrote my story to inspire others facing their own challenges, and dedicated to my family who kept me strong when I could easily have died. My book is in memory of all those lives taken by the Covid-19 pandemic, for I could have been one of them.

If these walls could talk…

They’d tell stories of care, compassion and community.

This is The Spine - the iconic corridor at the heart of City Hospital since 1887. Inspired by Florence Nightingale’s design, it connected wards and helped nurses keep watch over patients.

At 900ft long, it might just be the longest hospital corridor in the UK (we like to think so! 😉).

Thousands walked this path over the years – did you?

Perhaps you worked here or visited a loved one. Share your memories in the comments.

Congratulations to Sana Gul, registered nurse and student midwife, who has been nominated for the Ann Shuttleworth Rising Star Award at the 2025 Nursing Times Awards.

Sana qualified as a registered nurse in the UK in 2023 and is currently in her final year of her midwifery studies.

She was shortlisted for all the work she has done in her early career to champion the voices of nurses and midwives at various national and international events including the Royal College of Nursing Congress and the World Health Organization's 76th World Health Assembly.

Sana said: "I am grateful and humbled for this recognition at national level for my work in championing the leadership skills and development among early career nurses and midwives, something that I have been very vocal and active about since last six years through the Nursing Now Challenge.

"Most importantly I would like to thank Professor Aisha Holloway, Programme Director of the Nursing Now Challenge for nominating me. I look forward to the awards night in October. Fingers crossed!"

From Workhouse Infirmary to City Hospital, the humble hospital on Dudley Road cared for people from across Sandwell and Birmingham for generations.

Though known by many names - Dudley Road Hospital, Birmingham City Infirmary, even a wartime General Hospital, one thing stayed the same, the dedication of the people inside.

Thousands of lives, stories and memories began here. As we look to the future, we honour the past.

So, if you ever passed through its doors, drop a story below.

Staff at the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital have been recognised for their innovative efforts to improve access to care and address health inequalities, at an international awards ceremony celebrating excellent patient care.

The new hospital was the focal point of the award submission which scooped The Alliance Medical Health Inequalities Award at the Royal College of Physicians's Excellence in Patient Care Awards.

The Trust was represented at the ceremony, held in Liverpool last night, by Dr Sarb Clare, Acute Medical Consultant and lead for Same Day Emergency Care, Marsha Jones, Associate Chief Nurse, Emma Loosley, Head of Commissioning and Jayne Dunn, Director of Commissioning.

The Midland Met hospital opened in October 2024 and planning ensured local communities were involved in the early stages of designing patient pathways, including how stroke patients are stabilised before they are moved out of emergency care and into a rehabilitation hospital to continue their recovery.

Speaking after the ceremony, Dr Sarb Clare said: “It’s a real honour for the staff at the Midland Met and their dedicated work addressing health inequalities to be recognised with this award from the Royal College of Physicians.

“Our objective has always been to improve the life chances of our people of Sandwell and West Birmingham. The Midland Met not only addresses health inequalities but is an enabler for regeneration, education, employment and will be a beacon of hope for our population.”

Help shape planned healthcare services in the Black Country.

The Black Country Provider Collaborative (BCPC) – a partnership between Dudley, Sandwell and West Birmingham, Walsall and Wolverhampton NHS Trusts – is currently developing ideas to improve planned care through the creation of surgical hubs.

They have identified the funding needed to potentially set up a dedicated elective (planned) care surgical hub at Sandwell Health Campus.

The idea would see Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust and The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust bring together some of their surgical services at Sandwell Health Campus to carry out simple and routine procedures for general surgery, orthopaedics and gynaecology.

Patients who are currently waiting for surgery, have recent experience of elective care, or simply want to help shape a better future for local health services can find out further information and complete the survey by clicking this link:

Today, a VIP (Very Important Pup), met with hospital leaders at Midland Met.

Flash, a small Westie trained therapy dog, has been making a big impression at SWB. Visiting with his owner, Amanda, he has been supporting patient wellbeing and always leaves everyone that he meets with that feel good feeling that can only come from a cuddle with Flash.
