We’re excited to announce that Birmingham and Solihull ICS’ flagship initiative, Possibilities Beyond Limits (PBL), has been named a finalist in the Progression Programme of the Year category at the 2025 UK Social Mobility Awards (SOMOs).

PBL, which was first developed at Birmingham Community Healthcare Foundation Trust, is a transformational development programme designed to support aspiring leaders from underrepresented backgrounds across Birmingham and Solihull’s health and care system. The programme particularly supports Black, Asian, ethnically diverse, disabled, and neurodiverse colleagues – groups historically underrepresented in NHS leadership – an equips participants with the skills, confidence, and networks needed to progress. Since its pilot, over half of the participants have successfully moved into more senior roles, demonstrating the programme’s tangible impact on career progression and representation.

The SOMOs, now in their ninth year, celebrate forward-thinking organisations that are making meaningful strides to improve social mobility across the UK, therefore reaching the finals of this national award in itself is important recognition of our commitment to improving access to career opportunities across Birmingham and Solihull.

Ramal Royal, System Talent Manager, who developed the programme said: "I’m proud to have created and led the BCHC NHS CPD programme – from a small in-house idea to a system-wide initiative across health, entrepreneurship, and the voluntary sector in just 14 months. Amid growing healthcare challenges, we've doubled representation of racially diverse, disabled, and neurodivergent leaders. Being named a UK Social Mobility Awards finalist shows the power of equity-driven change."

Rabia Begum, Programme Manager for People and Workforce, at NHS Birmingham and Solihull, added: “Being shortlisted for a UK Social Mobility Award is a proud moment for our system. Possibilities Beyond Limits is more than a programme – it’s a commitment to equity, leadership, and unlocking potential.”

Winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in London on 2 October.

🚨 What you need to know about UTIs – especially if you're over 65

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can affect your bladder, kidneys, and urethra. Left untreated, they can lead to serious complications like sepsis – and may even require hospital treatment.

People over 65 are at higher risk, so it’s important to take steps to prevent infections and know what to do if symptoms appear.

💧 Preventing UTIs

Stay well hydrated – aim for 6 to 8 glasses a day (water, lower-fat milk, and sugar-free drinks all count!).

Don’t hold in your p*e – go as soon as you feel the urge.

Keep clean – daily washing or showering (especially if managing incontinence) can make a big difference.

Wipe front to back, change pads regularly, and avoid scented soaps in sensitive areas.

P*e after s*x and rinse with water to reduce the risk of infection.

🚨 Spot the signs of a UTI:

P*eing more often, urgently, or at night

Pain or burning when p*eing

New pain in the lower tummy or back

Blood in p*e or new incontinence

Feeling confused or agitated (especially in older adults)

Fever, chills, or very low body temperature

💬 Think you might have a UTI?
Speak to your GP, nurse, pharmacist, walk-in centre, or call NHS 111.
They’ll help you find the right treatment – and remember, different UTIs need different antibiotics. Always finish your prescribed course.

💻 For more information, visit the NHS website and search “UTIs”.

📢 Have you seen our campaign to tackle measles cases in Birmingham and Solihull?

Measles is a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious complications, such as severe lung infections and inflammation of the brain. It also damages and suppresses the immune system, leaving children more vulnerable to catching other illnesses.

If you or your child have missed a dose of the MMR vaccine, it's not too late to catch-up. Two doses can give you long-term protection against measles.

Contact your GP today to check if your vaccinations are up to date and help protect your loved ones and local community.
