Will glasses help my macular degeneration…?
1. If you have early or intermediate macular degeneration (AMD):
• Regular glasses can improve general vision clarity (for example, correcting short- or long-sightedness), but they can’t stop or reverse the retinal damage caused by AMD.
• However, keeping your prescription up to date helps your eyes work as efficiently as possible with the healthy parts of your retina.
2. If you have advanced (dry or wet) macular degeneration:
• Glasses alone usually don’t restore central vision, because AMD damages the macula — the part responsible for sharp, detailed sight.
• But special low-vision aids can help:
• Magnifying lenses or telescopic glasses to enlarge text or faces.
• High-contrast or filtered lenses (like amber or yellow tints) to improve contrast and reduce glare.
• Electronic magnifiers or wearable devices (like eSight or IrisVision) can project and enhance images from healthier parts of your retina.
3. What really helps:
• Eye vitamins (AREDS2 formulation) if recommended by your ophthalmologist.
• Healthy diet rich in leafy greens, fish, and antioxidants.
• Regular eye check-ups to monitor for signs of wet AMD (which can sometimes be treated with injections).
