Autumn term of Blank Canvas about to commence following successful pilot.
This summer saw the launch of Blank Canvas perinatal peer support group, with the pilot project launching in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Blank Canvas aims to provide peer support to women who are facing difficulties with their mental wellbeing during pregnancy, and in the first 2 years postpartum. The group provides a welcoming and safe space for women to meet and share their experiences of motherhood while being supported in creating a visual journal. Attendees can access a range of art materials, with different prompts and themes each week to encourage creative ideas. The process of making a creative journal proves to be therapeutic, allowing the women to have some time for themselves to explore their feelings through art. while also encouraging supportive peer relationships to form.
The pilot saw 5 women attend the group, held weekly at Swaddle in Hamilton. The results from the project have now been evaluated, and following the success of the first term, Blank Canvas is now due to return for an Autumn term. Word of mouth has spread quickly in Lanarkshire, with the Autumn term fully booked with a waiting list. While this is excellent news for the group, it is also a stark reminder of the need for accessible support for women with mild/moderate perinatal illness.
