Bone stress injuries are increasing as marathon training peaks

Nearly 50% occur in the tibia. Being female, having low energy availability, menstrual disruption, previous stress injuries with sudden training increases all increase your risk.

Rest isn’t rehab alone. Bone need progressive, structured loading, and usually needs 3 to 4 months for safe return to running. Rush it - and recurrence is high.

If you have persistent, shin, foot or hip pain that isn’t settling, get it checked properly.

Book online at www.marnicochrane.com or message the Clinic to arrange an assessment

Thanks Michael for an amazing CPD on the subject. Always a pleasure to have you and some cakes!!

Real Recovery Takes the Right Hands

When back pain takes over your daily life, finding someone who actually listens can change everything. Mariastella came to us dealing with persistent back pain, and after just two sessions, she's already feeling the difference.

What stands out in her experience isn't just the relief she's found. It's the clarity of understanding what's happening in her body, the time taken to truly assess her needs, and a treatment plan built specifically for her recovery. That's the foundation of evidence-based physiotherapy that works. Is your current back pain stopping you from doing the things you love? If you're tired of managing symptoms without addressing the root cause, maybe it's time for a different approach.

Why the Mummy Post Natal Check up Matters for Postnatal Recovery

Your body just did something extraordinary. But here's what many new mothers don't realise: pregnancy and childbirth place huge demands on your pelvic floor, core, and musculoskeletal system, and most women never receive a proper postnatal assessment.

The Mummy Post Natal Check up is a specialist physiotherapy assessment designed to check exactly how your body has recovered. It evaluates abdominal separation, pelvic floor function, posture, and any pain or dysfunction affecting your movement. Whether you're experiencing leaking when you sneeze, back pain from feeding positions, or simply want to return to exercise safely, this assessment gives you a clear picture of what's happening and a tailored plan to support your recovery. Have you had a postnatal assessment since giving birth? 💙

Shoulder Pain? Here's What You Need to Know 💪

Shoulder injuries are one of the most common reasons people visit a physiotherapist, and they can seriously impact your daily life—whether you're reaching for something on a high shelf, playing sport, or simply trying to sleep comfortably. The shoulder is a complex joint, and when something goes wrong, it often requires expert assessment to get to the root cause. Common issues include rotator cuff strains, frozen shoulder, and impingement syndrome, each requiring a different treatment approach.

The good news? Most shoulder injuries respond brilliantly to evidence-based physiotherapy. Treatment typically combines manual therapy (like joint mobilisation and soft tissue work), targeted rehabilitation exercises to restore strength and stability, and movement re-education to prevent future problems. What matters most is getting an accurate diagnosis early so you can start the right treatment plan. Have you been putting off getting that niggling shoulder pain checked? What's been stopping you from booking an appointment?

Acute vs Chronic Sports Injuries: Why Treatment Timing Matters

Twisted your ankle during last night's match, or dealing with that nagging shoulder pain that just won't shift? Understanding whether your injury is acute or chronic completely changes how we approach your treatment.

Acute injuries happen suddenly (think sprains, strains, tears) and need immediate RICE protocol, controlled inflammation management, and early-stage rehab to prevent long-term issues. Chronic injuries develop over time through overuse or incomplete recovery. These require a different strategy: we focus on identifying movement patterns that caused the problem, progressive loading, and building resilience to stop the cycle repeating.

Here's what many athletes get wrong: rushing back from an acute injury often creates a chronic problem. The key is matching your treatment to your injury type and recovery stage. What's worked for your teammate might not suit your situation. Have you been treating a chronic issue like an acute one (or vice versa)? What's your biggest frustration with a current sports injury?

Core Stability: Why It's Essential for Your Daily Life

You don't need to be an athlete to benefit from core stability. Whether you're lifting shopping bags, playing with your kids, or sitting at a desk for hours, your core is constantly working to support your spine and pelvis. When it's weak or poorly coordinated, everyday movements can lead to pain, poor posture, and injury.

Core stability isn't about having visible abs. It's about training the deep muscles that stabilise your trunk, protect your back, and improve how you move. Strong core function reduces pain, enhances balance, and supports long-term mobility. At our Bishop's Stortford clinic, we use clinical Pilates and tailored rehabilitation to help patients build functional strength that translates into real-world movement. What daily activity would feel easier for you if your core was stronger? 💪

Knee Replacement Recovery: What to Expect Week by Week

If you're preparing for a knee replacement or supporting someone through their recovery, understanding the rehabilitation timeline makes all the difference. The first few weeks post-surgery set the foundation for how well you'll move and function long-term, which is why structured, expert-guided physiotherapy is critical from day one.

Week 1-2: Focus on pain management, gentle range of motion exercises, and early mobilisation (often with crutches or a frame). Week 3-4: Build on movement quality, begin strengthening exercises, and work towards walking with less support. Week 5-8: Progress to functional exercises like stairs, squats, and balance work. Week 9-12: Return to more demanding activities with improved strength, stability, and confidence. Your consultant and physiotherapist will tailor this timeline to your specific surgery and goals.

What stage of knee replacement recovery are you currently at, or what questions do you have about the process? Our pre- and post-operative rehabilitation programmes are designed to optimise your recovery, reduce complications, and get you back to the activities you love with lasting results.
