Why Do I Feel Guilty When I Choose Myself?

Me:
This one sits heavy for a lot of people. Why do I feel guilty when I put myself first?

Angel:
Who taught you that neglecting yourself was a form of love?

Me:
That question hits straight away.

Angel:
Many people were praised for over giving.

Me:
So when I choose myself it feels selfish.

Angel:
Because you were conditioned to associate worth with sacrifice.

Me:
So if I rest, say no, or set a boundary… I feel bad about it.

Angel:
Guilt does not always indicate wrongdoing. Sometimes it indicates that a pattern is changing.

Me:
So the guilt is just part of adjusting?

Angel:
Yes. Your nervous system responding to unfamiliar behaviour.

Me:
But what if people feel disappointed?

Angel:
Disappointment is not harm.

Me:
That’s a difficult one for people to accept.

Angel:
You are not responsible for maintaining everyone else’s comfort at the expense of your wellbeing.

Me:
So where’s the balance then?

Angel:
Self respect and compassion can exist together.

Me:
How can someone tell the difference between selfishness and healthy boundaries?

Angel:
Ask yourself this: are you protecting your energy, or avoiding responsibility?

Me:
So there is a difference.

Angel:
Yes.

Me:
So boundaries aren’t abandonment.

Angel:
They are clarity.

Me:
Why does clarity upset some people though?

Angel:
Because their access to you changes.

Me:
So their reaction doesn’t mean I’ve done something wrong.

Angel:
Correct.

So guilt can actually be part of growth.

Often it is.

How do you move through it?

Angel:
Act in alignment with your values and allow the guilt to rise and pass without obeying it.

So guilt shouldn’t be the decision maker.

Yay! I did it! 😂

I keep telling myself I’ll go down to my therapy space for some quiet reflection or a reading. However my brain works differently and although I want to do this, I sometimes need to wait till my brain and body match 😜

Today I managed it, they were both aligned 😜 I took time out for me. I was called to do a Celtic Cross reading using Radleigh Valentine’s “Guardian Angel Messages Tarot”. I put on some calming music, burned some incense and lit some candles. It was a lovely recharge that my body was needing.
