As part of the Take the First Step challenge, we are introducing a brand new group… Hairy Hikers!

Ironic as most of us are bald.

We usually only deliver men only sessions but as we understand that first step into groups like this can be difficult, we are opening it up to anyone to come along too and ‘bring a friend’. Your encouragement might help a male in your life to join something he might otherwise not do.

If you are interested send me a message and I’ll book you on!

🥾🙌🏻

We wanted to challenge ourselves for and run a campaign to raise awareness around mental health.

The ‘Take the first step’ challenge aims to acknowledge how difficult taking that first step can be when asking for support.

I know. The hardest 3 words I ever had to say was, ‘I need help!’ I burst into tears for the next 20 minutes. It was hard but importantly, I got the help I needed. I’m still here.

A group of 63 strangers have come together, united under that cause, to attempt to reach a collaborative team total 10 million steps!
10 million reasons in solidarity with any man who takes that hard first step and asks for support.

Why 10,000,000?

On the 14th September 2025, my idol, Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton died by su***de. Ricky was a huge inspiration to me as a northern kid, he showed that if you worked hard and persevered you could achieve anything and get to the top of the world- no matter your upbringing. He made you believe you could achieve the impossible… he was one of us, he dared to dream and showed us the way!

10 million steps would be the equivalent of walking from the Etihad Stadium, Manchester to the MGM Grand in Los Vegas where he fought Floyd Mayweather. The result is not important. He united us northern kids and we took over America for that night.

From that day I was always ‘walking in a Hatton wonderland!’

We are fund raising for two causes. Any funds will raise will go to directly towards activities for men.

The total will be shared between BMitC and Elite Community Hub C.I.C who run Ricky's Club, a men’s peer to peer support group, helping men through their struggles that was set up in memory of their friend Ricky Fletcher who unfortunately took his own life.

This could happen to you, your friend, colleague, brother, dad or son. Mental health does not discriminate and can affect anyone.

Please follow our progress on our page, help us raise awareness by sharing our posts and if you are able to donate to our GoFundMe page

After a massive 628,700 steps yesterday…

We have made it across the Atlantic Ocean!!!!

With a total of 6,380,438 steps the equivalent of 4,726km we have made it to Happy Valley Goose Bay in Canada! 🇨🇦

No I’ve never heard of it either, sounds jolly though! And I’ll take it! We’ve made it across the Atlantic which feels like a massive milestone! Well done everyone! 🙌🏻

Sunday’s shift saw our 63 volunteers reach 574000 steps…

These are mega numbers! We now total 5,751,738 steps or 4300km the equivalent of getting to Cairo in Egypt 🇪🇬 or Tehran in Iran 🇮🇷

This week is …

Check in on someone and let them know you are there for them! That could make a world of difference 🩵🤍

Keep stepping!

Another stellar day of 544,600 on Saturday… we have broken the 5 million step barrier and have reached

5,177,738 steps. The equivalent of 3900km.

We have just reached the Sahara desert/ top of Nigeria and we are way into the North Atlantic (America here we come!)

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for being involved.

I hope you are having fun with this and it’s got you talking to friends, family, colleagues about the challenge and men’s mental health. Thank you to everyone who has liked and shared our page! It all helps us to raise our profile and reach those who may need inspiration right now 🩵🤍

I missed a couple of days updates as I was away…

So the last I left you we were 2,795,000 steps (2025km) and had just reached Casablanca / Moscow.

On Thursday we added a further 592,300 steps and Friday we another 666,400 steps (our biggest day yet!!! 🙌🏻)

As Friday was 1 week into the challenge I asked for the step results a few of our steppers who aren’t on the Step up app… this added a further 579438 steps to our weekly total.

Taking the number of steps achieved by us during the first week of the challenge to

4,633,138 steps 🤯

46% of our target reached in week 1! I think we need a new target… any thoughts? 😂

We might get to Los Vegas and back at this rate!

Well done to everyone involved! This is incredible. A special mention to Alun (a non-step up stepper) who walked a 100miles in week 1! 🤷🏻‍♂️ how is that even possible?!?

5 days down and we are making amazing progress.

580,800 steps on Day 5 bringing our total to 2,795,000 steps (we might make it around the world at this rate 😂)

2,795,000 steps converted to 2025km on AI which gets us out of Europe and in Casablanca, Morocco 🇲🇦 or Moscow, Russia 🇷🇺.

I have been speaking to our volunteers taking the step challenge who have mentioned how it’s helping them keep active. To remain consistent and reach your personal target you have to change your normal routine and many of them have done whether that’s walking to work, having walking meetings, going on walks before/ after work - or just running around the front room throughout the day 😂 all their efforts are appreciated 🩵🤍

Just by even getting involved in the challenge might spark a conversation with someone you know maybe a colleague, friend or family member which might let them know of our support / encourage them to find help.

If between us we reach one man who needs help through this campaign - we’ve done our job!

We are in Rome! 🇮🇹

Not literally but our walkers have helped us past the 2 million step mark (2,214,200) adding another
511,000km to the total on day 4. Fantastic effort!

We are still in Europe (1678km) but only just. I wonder if after todays steps we’ll make Africa 🤔

Anyways, it’s back to work for most of us after the bank holiday weekend. This is the daily grind but it’s still important to get those steps in. I know some of you guys have active jobs but if you have any hints and tips for those who’s jobs are pretty sedentary (like mine) I am all ears…

Keep up the good work guys!
