As a result when they sleep there are so many unexpressed arousals that need diffusing, they spend more time in REM sleep.

REM sleep uses large amounts of energy.

When your brain is endlessly churning through emotionally charged material combined with not having enough slow wave sleep, you are left feeling exhausted.

This exhaustion then leads to lack of focus and motivation.
