Safe care for every newborn and child…

Today is World Patient Safety Day and this year the focus is on children. Every child has the right to safe, quality health care - from the very beginning. Yet, newborns and young children face higher risks due to their rapid development, evolving health needs and different disease patterns. They also rely on adults to speak up and make decisions for them.

The World Health Organisation is calling on us all - parents, caregivers, health practitioners, health care leaders, educators and communities - to build a safer, healthier future for every child.

Here’s to ‘Patient safety from the start!’

Royal Bournemouth Hospital will soon become our emergency care site. To get ready, we’re transforming our hospital with refurbishment works that will bring a new Admissions and Recovery Unit, Surgical Admissions Unit and Surgical Same Day Emergency Care.

A huge thank you to all the teams making this possible, helping us create a space where patients get the right care, in the right place, at the right time. 💙

A new clinic to support patients with respiratory conditions has opened in Poole, providing assessment and management of symptoms in one local hub.

Based in our Outpatient Assessment Centre on the former St Mary’s Maternity Unit site, the clinic aims to bring specialist diagnostics such as spirometry and lung function tests closer to the community, treating a range of conditions including asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

Anna Szyfner, Operational and Performance Manager for the centre, said: “It’s fantastic to see how this service is already making a difference for our patients. By bringing respiratory testing into a more accessible location at St Mary’s, with convenient parking and drop-off access, and supporting the clinics through our Outpatients Team, we’re showing what real collaboration between primary and secondary care can achieve. I’m proud to be part of a project that is improving access and delivering high-quality, patient-centred care."

Well done team, great work!

On Sunday 7 September at 3pm, the UK government will test the Emergency Alerts system. The test will be sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones and tablets across the UK. You will hear a loud siren-like sound, vibration, and a message will appear on the screen confirming that this is a test. The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds. You will not need to take any further action.

Depending on your phone’s features, the alert will work with screen magnification and may read the message out for you having also overridden volume settings. The unique noise emitted by the phone should also be audible for those who use a hearing aid.

The Emergency Alerts system is an important tool for reaching the public in emergency situations. However, if you need to turn off these alerts (including the test), visit https://orlo.uk/3bePI for step-by-step instructions.

Our Story

We are University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. Based on the south coast of England, the trust serves a population of more than 800,000 people, reaching as far as Purbeck, the New Forest and South Wiltshire, and collectively employing more than 9,000 members of staff.

Our trust is comprised of three hospitals; the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Poole Hospital and Christchurch Hospital, which merged on 1 October 2020, creating a new organisation. This will provide huge opportunities and benefits to the way we deliver patient care in the future and will lead to better outcomes, improved quality and more efficient service delivery.

Within UHD we pride ourselves on the delivery of safe and high quality care. Every single person working within this organisation makes a difference to the quality of care provided. We have a number of exciting developments due to take place over the next few years, coupled with an ambitious transformation agenda. The Royal Bournemouth Hospital will become the major emergency hospital and Poole Hospital will become the major planned hospital, alongside other services provided for east Dorset. Christchurch Hospital incorporates the Day Hospital which provides rehabilitation for our older population, the Macmillan Unit which provides specialist palliative care, rheumatology, and dermatology.
