What is an End of Life Doula
I trained with and am regulated by End of Life Doula UK . If you feel you would benefit from support please reach out to me.
What is an end of life doula
An end-of-life doula (sometimes called a “death doula”) is a trained, non-medical professional who supports people who are dying and their loved ones—emotionally, practically, and sometimes spiritually—through the final stages of life.
What they do
End-of-life doulas don’t replace doctors, nurses, or hospice care. Instead, they focus on comfort and guidance in ways that go beyond medical treatment:
Emotional support – sitting with the person, listening, helping process fear, grief, or acceptance
Planning and advocacy – helping with advance care plans, funeral wishes, or legacy projects
Practical help – assisting families with what to expect as death approaches
Presence at death – being there during the final hours, offering calm reassurance
Support for loved ones – helping family members cope before and after death
How they differ from hospice care
National Health Service or hospice teams provide medical care (pain management, nursing, etc.)
End-of-life doulas provide holistic, non-medical support (emotional, informational, companionship)
They often work alongside hospice or palliative care teams, not instead of them.
Why people use them
People may choose an end-of-life doula to:
Have a more personalised, peaceful dying experience
Reduce anxiety around death
Ensure their wishes are clearly understood and respected
Give family members extra support and guidance.
