👻👻 On September 30th we will be heading across to the famous and reputability haunted Skirrid inn, Abergavenny
Why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone and have dinner out, followed by an investigation at the Skirrid inn, a place frequented in his day by the infamous Judge Jeffery's also known as the "The Hanging Judge".👻👻

👻👻We were bowled over after our last event, where at one point we had 2 separate devices, successfully interacting as "yes" and "no" for questions asked, all captured and streamed live across Facebook👍, so we just had to return, in hope of some further interaction.👻👻

👻👻Why not join us for dinner followed by an investigation at this incredible location?👻👻

👻👻 With the town of Abervagenny only being a stone's throw away, the are plenty of hotels and b&b's available should you wish to stay over. Alternatively if you like camping etc, why not join us, on the campsite only a 3 minute walk away 👻👻

Painting: Truth Coming Out Of The Well, Jean-Léon Gérome, 1896.

The Lie said to the Truth, "Let's take a bath together, the well water is very nice. The Truth, still suspicious, tested the water and found out it really was nice. So they got naked and bathed. But suddenly, the Lie leapt out of the water and fled, wearing the clothes of the Truth.

The Truth, furious, climbed out of the well to get her clothes back. But the World, upon seeing the naked Truth, looked away, with anger and contempt. Poor Truth returned to the well and disappeared forever, hiding her shame. Since then, the Lie runs around the world, dressed as the Truth, and society is very happy...

Because the world has no desire to know the naked Truth.

Redfern House Uttoxeter
(with Circle of Friends)

A number of riotous persons met in the street, near the meeting house, who besides disturbing the congregation, made a bonfire at the pillory in which they fixed the effigy of a minister, which they after committed to the flames.
FRANCIS REDFERN

Uttoxeter was a microcosm of the religious, social and political development witnessed throughout
Britain, between 1650 and 1900.
The town's history reflects the tensions between different religious groups throughout this period.
There were conflicts between members of the Church of England, Catholics, Puritans and Presbyterians in the 1600s and 1700s.
This was followed by the rise of Quakerism and subsequently
Methodism in the 1700s and 1800s.

Redfern House Uttoxeter

Mary Howitt was a popular writer of the 1800s. She was born into a Quaker family at Coleford in Gloucestershire. She spent her childhood in Uttoxeter until her marriage to William Howitt in 1821.
Her father, Samuel Botham, kept a strict Quaker house. Music, discussion or a love of anything considered idolatrous, was not allowed.
Dress was plain, usually grey or black without decoration. For Mary, marriage brought freedom from these restrictions.

Mary became a social reformer campaigning for women's rights and ending the slave trade, amongst many things. Her writings changed children's literature. She was inspired by her childhood experiences and later travels.
Some Uttoxeter characters and surroundings feature in her books 'Wood Leighton' and
'Two Apprentices'.
Together with William, Mary edited journals, and wrote prose and poetry.
They were friends with many of the literary 'greats of the time, such as Dickens and Tennyson. Mary spoke five languages, and translated many works including Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tales.
After William's death in 1879 she resided in Italy. She was buried in Rome after her death in 1881
