1st March marks the beginning of women’s history month so it seems like a good moment to reflect on some of the women who shaped the profession of massage today…
Pictured is Rosalind Paget, one of the four women who together founded the ‘Society of Trained Masseuses’ in 1894.
These women transformed massage from an unregulated practice to a recognised branch of remedial healthcare. Furthermore, by the late 19th century the role of ‘masseuse’ offered women a respectable, independent means of livelihood.
