Sir Robert Watson-Watt

On this day in 1892: Radar pioneer Sir Robert Watson-Watt was born in Brechin. He is best known for demonstrating that aircraft could be detected by bouncing radio waves off them – a breakthrough that proved crucial to the Allied victory in World War II.

Today, his legacy is commemorated in his hometown by this bronze statue in Brechin's St Ninian's Square, which depicts him holding a radar tower and a Spitfire.

However, in a twist of irony, he was once pulled over for a speeding fine in Canada after being caught by a radar gun. To the officer who ticketed him, he remarked: "Had I known what you were going to do with it, I would never have invented it!"
