Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine

RSV is a common and highly infectious respiratory virus that affects the breathing system. It generally causes
mild illness with cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, cough, fever, or decrease in appetite. Most people
recover after 2 to 3 weeks, but RSV can cause severe illness in some people, including pneumonia and
bronchiolitis, leading to complications and hospitalisation.
The RSV vaccine, which was first offered in Scotland last year, has been successful in reducing hospitalisations
among those who are more vulnerable to serious complications of RSV infection. A study published earlier this
year showed a 62% reduction in RSV-related hospitalisations among the eligible older adult age groups following
the vaccine’s introduction in August 2024.
The vaccine is being offered to:
people turning 75 years old on and between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026*
pregnant women (from 28 weeks of pregnancy).
* Those aged 76-79 who have not been vaccinated against RSV may be eligible for vaccination. Individuals should
contact their local NHS immunisation team for more information.

Cardiovascular Disease

In Scotland, cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and stroke is the second leading cause of overall disease burden and the second most common cause of death after cancer nationwide. Accounting for over 25% of all deaths, many of these occur in individuals under 75 years old and are classified as avoidable. This means that they could potentially be prevented by managing the risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease through effective public health initiatives or timely healthcare intervention.

In response, the Scottish Government is currently funding health centres to run projects offering risk assessments for heart disease, stroke and diabetes to a pre-determined group of eligible patients.

If you fall within this group of eligible patients, staff at Brechin Health Centre may invite you for an assessment to gather information about your height, weight and smoking status along with a blood pressure check or blood tests, if appropriate.
