Medications can be essential, even life-changing, but some can also impact your gut health in ways people don’t always expect.
Certain medications may alter the balance of gut bacteria, affect digestion, or irritate the gut lining. Over time, this can contribute to symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, abdominal discomfort, or changes in bowel habits.
Common examples include:
• Antibiotics, which can disrupt the gut microbiome
• NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), which may irritate the gut lining
• Acid-suppressing medications, which can affect digestion and nutrient absorption
• Some long-term medications that influence gut motility
If you’re noticing ongoing digestive symptoms and you’re taking regular medication, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture, not to stop treatment, but to understand how best to support your gut alongside it.
If your gut doesn’t feel quite right, let’s talk.
