For healthy movement, each & every joint needs to freely access it's full range of movement.
Each joint can move in 1, 2 or 3 planes (sagittal, frontal & transverse).
A plane of motion is an imaginary flat surface that divides the body in half (see picture) to help categorise movement directions:
π΄ Sagittal - forwards/backwards (view from the side)
π’ Frontal - side-to-side (view from the front)
π΅ Transverse - rotation (top down view)
It's great to move the body as a whole in all these three dimensions e.g. with the likes of yoga, Pilates, functional training, dancing, varied strength programmes (etc)
BUT! To get the most out of these multi-directional activities & moving through day-to-day life, the accumulative 3D joint actions need to be there.
Otherwise, we just move around our limitations. If we're lacking movement in one plane, we'll simply compensate & move more in the others - reducing efficiency & ease.
That's why I assess all clients from head to toe, in all 3 planes - observing gait, posture & movement mechanics - this gives the best chance of weeding out the root cause of, for example, a recurring injury ππΌ
