The king of all movements…

Everyone should be squatting regardless of activity levels… why?

Here’s a number of reasons…

-bigger stronger legs
-improves core strength
-higher power output
-improved mobility and posture
-build stronger tendons, ligaments and improve injury prevention
- boosts hormone production

There are many variations of the squat… back, front, overhead, zercher and single leg variations…

Whatever you do, squat, even if it’s just without any load, it’ll do wonders for your body in years to come if your squat mechanics are optimal…

Been suffering with IT Band/Knee pain recently? Been foam rolling the IT Band a lot but no change in pain? Well actually your IT Band is not the problem!

Your problem is actually your glutes, especially glute medius that probably isn't firing! Glute medius is the prime mover for hip stabilisation allowing you to abduct your hip to prevent the knee from tracking inward.

However today we will talk about the other root of the problem. The TFL or Tensor Fascia Lata a small muscle that is attached to the IT Band.

The TFL is only meant to assist in stabilising the knee and abducting the hip. When the glutes aren't firing the TFL starts over-compensating for the glutes which tightens the IT Band, this leads to tightness, inflammation and pain down the IT Band and knee. So rather than smash the IT Band with a foam roller mobilise the TFL.

To mobilise the TFL place a lacrosse ball on the spot shown below in the photos. Lie on the floor and apply your full body weight or what you can tolerate onto the ball. Find the tight spots of the TFL and apply pressure waves up and down and across the muscle as needed until you feel it release.

Thought of the day...... if the IT Band is hurting, rather than attack the source of pain look for the cause.....

Hamstring Anatomy 101!!

The muscles in the posterior compartment of the thigh are collectively known as the hamstrings. They consist of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus and semimembranosus, which form prominent tendons medially and laterally at the back of the knee.

These muscles play a part in helping flex and extend your legs from the hip and knee joints as well as internal and external and internal rotation of the thighs from the hips joints.

A hamstring strain is one of the most common soft tissue injuries in sports. This refers to an excessive tear of the muscle fibres. Damage to these muscle fibres may produce whats called a heamatoma (damage to the blood vessels that causes bruising). This type of injury is common in sports that include bursts of sprinting or kicking.

A strong posterior chain is important for performance in most sports but also for Injury prevention (ACL ruptures) posture and function. The hamstrings should be trained eccentrically, isometrically and concentrically!

This includes movements such as RDL’s, long lever holds and leg curls. Whatever your performance or training goals, make sure you’re not neglecting your hamstrings!

Hi all, I am now offering sports massage services again on a mobile basis only from the 10th of April. For those who don’t know me here Is a little bit about me…

My name is John Lloyd
I am passionate about training and recovery, I have trained for over 15 years and used various recovery methods to improve my training and performance whilst having played rugby union and league. I have now found new passions now participating in Muay Thai and most recently BJJ and use the same approaches to aid my performance and recovery.

I qualified as a level 3 sports massage therapist in Bridgend College in 2015 where I was fortunate to get practical experience within professional rugby with Dragons RFC, in that year I also interned as a strength & conditioning coach with the Dragons academy. I qualified as a level 4 sports massage therapist the following year in Neath Port Talbot college expanding my skill set to test and treat soft tissue injuries.

I have worked with a number of people from different sports ranging from endurance athletes, crossfitters, bodybuilders & martial artists… My treatments are not just available to those who participate in sport but to anyone who requires stress and tension relief from the vigours of everyday life…

I believe recovery and maintenace of our bodies goes beyond Sports Massage all the way down to how we move and look after ourselves in every day life. With my experiences and qualifications I can provide advice for strength training, prehab, rehabilitation and mobility advice to aid with every day movement or sports performance and injury prevention.

Too book in please use the link in bio or DM

Please note my availability will vary according to the rotas in my full time employment, check calendly for updates of availability or DM.

Many thanks.

John
