The Mental Health Treatment Requirement (MHTR) is one of three community based sentences for people convicted of an offence(s) which is below the threshold for a custodial sentence and where an individual has a diagnosed/undiagnosed mental health needs that can be treated in the community.
The MHTR offers a structured support package centred around mental health interventions and treatment options. These could include:
* Psycho education, breathing, mindfulness
* Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
* Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
* Mindful practices
* Value based solution focused therapy
A typical MHTR could include:
* Up to 12 weekly sessions
* Each lasting approximately 50 minutes
* Conducted in person, over the phone or via a video link
The person must provide consent to the MHTR before steps can be taken to begin this course of treatment.
