Wings.

I hope that you find what you are looking for.

But I hope that what you are looking for is driven only by things like love, and mending, and a soul at peace with where it resides.

I hope that all of the parts of you that still remain fragile, grow sturdier and braver with time.

That you choose sometimes, to do the harder things in life so that when you encounter an unexpected storm, you will already have some flight behind your wings.

I hope you feel deeply and fall with arms wide open beneath you.

I hope you heal.

Even if you do not yet know where the path is leading you.

I hope you find your spirit in tact and filling.

That you find the kind of water that quenches your thirst and the kind of shelter that does not crumble.

I hope that you are able to find something to hold on to when the winds change direction.

And I hope that somewhere along the way, you find yourself too.

If you don't want to get criticized, hide from the world.

Be nobody, stand for nothing.

Never express yourself.

Keep your creativity hidden.

But realize, that a life lived in fear and anonymity is no life at all.

Progress and growth demand bravery.

Have the courage to be disliked while staying kind.

Meet cruelty with grace and stand tall in who you are.

No matter the noise.

Beautiful as always โค๏ธ

There are bridges you have yet to walk across.

Mountains you have yet to look up at.

Airports you have yet to touch base in.

Souls you have yet to encounter.

Oceans you have yet to immerse yourself in.

Sunsets you have yet to see.

Flowers you have yet to pick.

So why would you ever imagine that all you have already experienced is all that there is?

Your soul is seeking to feel.

Your soul is seeking home.

The home in your own heart that exists beyond the conditioned ways you have been told you need to be in this world.

A home you can take with you anywhere.

The world often pushes us in directions that seem right.

Yet it is only your soul that knows what is right for you.

Your soul knows what feels good.

Your soul knows what it takes.

There is a whole world out there waiting for you.

Allow your soul to light the way.

Selfless.

Do you ever want to run away and start over?

Wipe the slate clean.

Begin all over again with a blank canvas?

Itโ€™s ok, we all feel that way sometimes.

It doesnโ€™t mean you donโ€™t love your life or the people in it.

It doesnโ€™t mean that you wouldnโ€™t give your last breath to see them happy.

Sometimes when we yearn to be selfish, it means we have been selfless for too long.

4 easy tips for feeding a forage-only diet successfully:

1. Forage should be the foundation of your horseโ€™s diet, fed at around 1.5-2% of their body weight1. The average 1,000 lb horse, at maintenance, should eat 15 to 20 lbs per day.

2. Provide a quality diet balancer to cover essential vitamins & minerals.

3. Test your forage to make sure your horse is getting enough calories, understand macro and micro-nutrient composition, and ensure your hay is high in digestible fiber. Studies show that forage cut at an early plant maturity stage provides high fiber digestibility and energy content, while late-cut forage does not8.

4. Use a hay net to encourage all-day grazing, and slow down easy-keepers.

I find it completely bizarre that often common sense isnโ€™t used when we are handling our horses, actually itโ€™s something that boils my blood and considering I have this platform I feel I can try help the most important person/animal in this situation โ€ฆ the horse.

You would have thought weโ€™ve moved on from โ€œold horsemanship training methodsโ€, โ€œbeing the bossโ€, โ€œgetting after the horseโ€, basically scaring them into submission but unfortunately we havenโ€™t.

Now, Iโ€™m not here to attack anyone or anyoneโ€™s โ€œtrainingโ€ methods but what I do hope is that people can take a look at how they handle their horses at a different perspective.

Imagine if someone walked up to you, demanded, in fact shouted tasks they want you to complete and they stand back and wait for you to do itโ€ฆ would you do it?
Our horses are not here to follow our commands blindly, they should be here to be a horse first and our friend second, and friends do things for each other itโ€™s never a one way street otherwise in my eyes thatโ€™s a pretty miserable friendship.

I often see owners getting frustrated and upset when their horse doesnโ€™t do what they ask, they often punish them for not doing the task they were asked, I remember as a child I struggled learning Mathematics, I was not good at it at all (Iโ€™m still not) I often got discouraged by teachers and talked to in a negative way for getting it wrong.
Do you think I wanted to try again? Nope, I wanted to avoid any situation that resulted in me failing, because it didnโ€™t feel good.

Itโ€™s important to remember that often our horses donโ€™t know what we are asking of them, usually they donโ€™t follow through with an activity because they are confused at what we are asking. ๐‘๐ž๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ, and ask them again. Itโ€™s like we are saying โ€œGood try buddy, but that wasnโ€™t quite it, can we try again?

It sounds self explanatory doesnโ€™t it, but for some it isnโ€™t. For some this is all they know. Again this where our common sense comes in, how would you feel if someone used physical violence to your child to get them to โ€œlearnโ€โ€ฆ it hasnโ€™t, doesnโ€™t and will never work. All you are teaching is that life is scary, painful and unpredictable. All you are teaching is trauma.

Letโ€™s all say this togetherโ€ฆ..

(In fact no living being learns through fear)

Foraging fun with hogweed?

Hogweed - Probably on e of the most commonly selected herbs by horses at this time of year. Up there with Cow parsley and Cleavers.
Heracleum shondylium. Such a lovely latin name ๐Ÿ™‚ and not to be confused with Giant hogweed. The noxious, toxic definitely don't want to touch variety.
Common hogweed is a prolific, easily recognizable native species. Found in hedgerows and margins throughout the UK. It is one of the few native plants that has little folklore or mystical context outside of its general and medicinal use. Possibly missing a place in historical lore due to its close proximity to everyday life. Despite this:
Hogweed is rich in vitamin C, boosting the immune system but also helping in the absorption of many vital elements
It is indicated in kidney and heart inflammation due to its diuretic action, while also helping stimulate the circulatory system
Through its cooling action it can help with urinary tract inflammation and infections
Hogweed has a cooling nature that helps in reducing fever.
It is especially helpful with rheumatic and arthritic complaints, it was traditionally boiled in water, allowed to cool and fed to cows in winter.
The herb additionally acts as a carminative, helping to expel gases. Super helpful for windy horses.
So while it is prolific in the hedgerows and bridal ways horses can be very selective about the time of year when they enjoy it, many horses usually favouring it in early to mid Spring.
It does have a photo toxic quality so if you or your animal is sensitive take extra precautions. Wear gloves if your picking it up for your horse and limit exposure.
Medicinally it can offer much to metabolic horses at this time of year due to the diuretic qualities.

The Rubber Band Effect in Horse Training:

Let me compare horse training to a rubber band.

When you rush horse training and try to obtain a certain result on your timeline and not the horses, you stretch the elastic band.

You can stretch and stretch that elastic band and for a time, itโ€™ll seem like youโ€™re getting further ahead.

And for a time, itโ€™ll actually be true.

But, as you push on, the tension will build and eventually, it will become too much and that elastic band may snap, rebounding back with much more of a sting than what wouldโ€™ve otherwise have existed if tension was relived earlier.

If you had just relaxed and slowed down, allowing the horse to build the flexibility, fitness and understanding for the work being asked.

If the horseโ€™s fear and tension was honoured and sought to be relieved instead of punished and pressured on for a resultโ€ฆ

If there had just been a little more patience, result couldโ€™ve been different. The fall out that is a snapped rubber band, a broken or traumatized horse, need not exist. The damage may be mental, emotional or physical, but the damage is still apparent.

When we push and we push, eventually, the horse will hit a breaking point and once you get to that point, the physical and mental damage the horse sustained in the process can come rebounding back in a manner much more severe than what would have been had the time been taken in the beginning.

Trying to fix something that is damaged or broken is a lot more difficult than not damaging it in the first place.

Touch -

The physiology of how the information travels in the nervous system is the exact same!

On top of that, the area of the brain that processes the touch is the same area that elicits emotions.

Touch is social. Touch can be associated with good feelings or bad feelings.

Because the brain is changeable and moldable, we can help horses have a good relationship with touch.

Think about how many horses have a bad relationships with touch - anywhere on their body.

Anything from physical abuse, to a saddle that didnโ€™t fit, to an accident or bad injury

The nervous system is AMAZING. Letโ€™s work with it for the good of the horse.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Mickey,a very handsome gent to give him his very first Reiki session. He was unsure of the energy at first so I started at a distance for him to get used to the feel of it. He soon accepted it with hands on. He gave some amazing releases ,his body was really relaxed afterwards. Even after we left him to process the changes and feelings he was having ,he was still yawning. Safe to say I think he enjoyed it.๐Ÿ’–

That's usually the case
14/01/2023

That's usually the case

โ€œWhy doesnโ€™t he do it for me?โ€ โ€œSheโ€™s just hard in her mouthโ€ โ€œIf he doesnโ€™t do it, it means he doesnโ€™t listen, you have to push harder!โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t let her get away with itโ€ โ€œHe just does not want to do it, heโ€™s just being lazyโ€

This and other examples of a mindset that horses have the exact same cognition as we do and consciously choose whether they WANT to do something for us or just simply donโ€™t.
Itโ€™s not that they donโ€™t have a cognition or a free will - but itโ€™s less complicated and less โ€œthought ofโ€ as with us.

Most horses WANT to do stuff for us. And most cues are not a question for WANT but for โ€œif you donโ€™t then โ€ฆโ€ and an animal rather chooses to obey than to fight as long as their nervous system believes its the best choice.

And thatโ€™s the clue: if a horse does not do something we ask, itโ€™s a nervous system decision to not do it - therefore the horse CANโ€™T do it. It doesnโ€™t matter if thatโ€™s physical or emotional - mammals have a quite strong connection with their bodies unlike us, so if itโ€™s a mental โ€˜noโ€™ itโ€™s also a physical โ€˜noโ€™.

Important is, that we change that mindset from not wanting to not being able to. If a horse โ€˜does not listenโ€™ โ€˜yieldโ€™ โ€˜canterโ€™ โ€˜stand stillโ€™ โ€˜give hoovesโ€™ etc., it is because itโ€™s nervous system probably prohibits its body to do so.

It makes no sense to punish or accuse someone who is physically not able to do something for not doing it. It is not a personal attack or a gaining advantage for malicious intent. Itโ€™s simply a protecting of their own integrity. And thatโ€™s in our best interest - because who knows better if the ligaments, joints or muscles can do something if not the horse itself?

Asking โ€˜whyโ€™ a horse wonโ€™t do something is the first step to change perspective. Why does he canโ€™t? And how can I help him find confidence and comfort to learn to do it in the future?
