Packed a bag and headed to London for two days of neuropsychiatry. Slightly nervous. Mostly excited.
Last week I presented at the 39th British Neuropsychiatry Association Conference - a data blitz on a feasibility randomised controlled trial of somatic yoga therapy for Functional Neurological Disorder.
FND is a disabling neurological condition affecting motor, sensory and seizure function - widely misunderstood and often undertreated. This study was the first randomised controlled trial of a structured somatic yoga intervention for FND. As lead author and therapist-researcher, I designed and delivered the intervention, working across both the clinical and research sides of the trial - and getting to bring this work into a neuropsychiatry setting felt like a significant moment.
The headline findings: the intervention was feasible, acceptable and safe, with 100% retention in the yoga arm and large exploratory effects for FND symptom improvement and interoceptive awareness - sustained at three months.
The paper is under review. More to come when it’s published.
