An incredible few days of teamwork and impact at Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in The Gambia! 🇬🇲✨

Our surgical and anaesthetic teams have been working tirelessly, taking on complex fractures and life-changing reconstructive procedures — restoring function, dignity, and hope for so many patients. 💪🩺

Our amazing nurses focused on compassionate care, prioritizing pain management and educating patients and staff on the importance of effective analgesia before dressing changes — helping to make healing a more comfortable experience.

Meanwhile, our physiotherapy team connected with the Gambian Social Welfare Department and continued essential rehabilitation on the wards, preparing patients for safe discharge and successful recovery beyond the hospital walls.

Alongside dual operating with the orthopods, our plastics team made full use of the ward procedure room, ensuring local anaesthetic cases could be completed efficiently — increasing access and minimizing waiting times. 🩹✨

Every moment here is a reminder of why global healthcare collaboration matters — skills shared, lives changed, and futures strengthened. 🌍❤️

Our GamMed anaesthetic team is made up of four consultant anaesthetists — two adult specialists and two paediatric specialists — who have been working tirelessly to ensure every patient receives the safest and most appropriate form of anaesthesia for their procedure.

Providing anaesthesia in The Gambia is vastly different from working in the UK. We are unable to bring many of the medications we would normally rely on, and equipment supplies are limited and declining quickly. Frequent power cuts mean we must be constantly prepared to manually ventilate patients and repeatedly administer medication to keep them safely anaesthetised.

With multiple operating theatres running at once and only two anaesthetists at each hospital site, the team is stretched across the entire hospital. In addition to anaesthetising for surgery, they are delivering regional nerve blocks, providing pain relief on the wards, and administering local anaesthetic in procedure rooms to enable the Gambian surgical team to perform pain-free minor operations.

Alongside this intensive clinical workload, the team is also teaching and supporting local doctors and nurses every day — sharing skills, building confidence, and helping to create long-lasting change.

Their work is not only transforming care for patients right now, but also helping to strengthen the future of anaesthesia in The Gambia

We were delighted to welcome Harriet King, The Gambian High Commissioner, to visit the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Ndemban.
Our team & the local healthcare professionals were thrilled to meet her, show her around the hospital, and share our work in the operating room.
We're so grateful for her hospitality in hosting us at her home in the evening.

Today was exceptionally busy across all teams, with a total of 13 successful procedures completed.

In Ndemban, plastic and orthopaedic surgeons worked collaboratively on a highly complex case, achieving a life-changing result.
The paediatric orthopaedic team performed surgeries on babies aged 10 months to 2 years, as well as children up to 13 years old — all with excellent outcomes.

The adult orthopaedic team completed a challenging ulna reconstruction, involving a bone graft from the hip to the wrist.

Meanwhile in Banjul, the team carried out life-enhancing reconstructive surgery on a 1-year-old child, in addition to three other complex procedures.

Our nurses were busy on the post operative surgical ward ensuring all of our patients from yesterday were comfortable, with their pain managed as well as receiving today’s patients.

The physios were out on the wards mobilising the post operative patients and preparing for discharge.

Despite the late finish, the team remains energised and ready to begin again first thing tomorrow.

Day two of The GamMed team's mission has been an outstanding success, with 11 life-changing procedures performed by our team of expert surgeons and consultants. We're grateful for the support of local medical professionals, who worked alongside our team in Mdemban and Banjul. The day was filled with teaching, training, and, most importantly, transforming lives. With all procedures completed as planned, patients are now on the road to recovery, either at home or in the hospital. Tomorrow, we'll review their progress and begin the next stage of their journey, including mobilisation and physiotherapy.

Day one concluded with excellent results!
Approximately 200 patients were assessed and treated in clinic, representing a broad spectrum of needs: adult lower and upper limb cases, complex plastic and reconstructive surgical cases, and children in need of paediatric orthopaedic surgical care.
The patients that were highlighted for surgery this week were pre operatively assessed by our GamMed anaesthetists.
Those requiring wound care seen by our perioperative practitioners and the patients needing mobilisation following previous surgery or trauma were seen by the physiotherapy team.
It’s definitely set to be a very very busy week of operating here in The Gambia

As we prepare to depart for The Gambia tomorrow, we've gained insight into some of the patients we'll be seeing at our Sunday clinic. We're anticipating a very busy clinic, but we're committed to seeing each patient who is waiting for us.
We will utilise our operating theatre time effectively and perform as many procedures as possible during our stay.
Our week-long mission will focus on performing life-changing surgeries and sharing knowledge with local trainee surgeons, anaesthetists, and nurses.

During our outreach trips to The Gambia, the physiotherapy team takes part in patient assessments and treatments at the clinic, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and delivering training sessions for local physiotherapists. Our main focus is providing post-surgical physiotherapy care on the wards, working closely with the local team to ensure that patients are safe, comfortable, and ready to return home.

Every child deserves to walk, run and play without limits. Unfortunately, complex fractures, severe burns or congenital conditions can seriously impact the children’s lives.
Our aim during our outreach trips is to perform the necessary surgery and deliver post operative physiotherapy to help these children live life without boundaries 🇬🇲 🇬🇧
