It’s been two weeks since the GamMed team returned home from their recent outreach trip to The Gambia 🇬🇲

Since arriving back, the team has remained closely connected, continuing to monitor the recovery of our post-operative patients. We are incredibly proud to share that of the 43 patients who received life-changing surgery, only one remains in hospital — and she is progressing well following her complex procedure.

Back home, conversations are still filled with reflections on what was truly an unforgettable experience. New friendships were formed, powerful moments were shared, and the impact of the work continues to resonate with us all.

As the GamMed team continues to grow, we are already looking ahead to our November trip. Preparations are underway to ensure we deliver the very best perioperative care to patients in The Gambia.

Today marked GamMeds’ last full day of operating — and what a day it was.

From start to finish, every theatre was utilised to its fullest, with the team working tirelessly to deliver care as efficiently as possible. Across the hospital, it was incredibly busy: new patients arriving through A&E, while those already on the wards required ongoing surgical input.

There was constant movement behind the scenes, with beds being carefully managed to maintain flow — from recovery through to the surgical wards — ensuring we could continue bringing patients into theatre without delay.

Beyond theatre, the nursing team stepped up once again, supporting the resuscitation department with a critically ill patient. Meanwhile, physiotherapists worked relentlessly to mobilise patients and prepare them for safe, timely discharge — helping free up much-needed bed space.

And 12 hours later… our team is still operating.

An extraordinary effort from an exceptional team…both GamMed and our fabulous local colleagues 🇬🇲🇬🇧

Days 3 & 4 in theatre have been incredibly busy — but every moment has been worth it.
The team have also been hard at work delivering teaching and training to the nursing staff, students and physiotherapists.

Life-changing surgeries have been performed for so many patients, making a real difference where it matters most. From paediatrics to plastic surgery and adult orthopaedics, the procedures have been complex, challenging, and deeply rewarding.

Our surgeons have shown exceptional skill, supported by anaesthetists delivering highly specialised care — from general anaesthesia with nerve blocks to regional techniques with light sedation — ensuring each patient’s safety and comfort throughout.

Meanwhile, our physiotherapists have been hard at work on the wards, helping patients mobilise and prepare for discharge, while our nursing team continues to provide personalised post-operative care, keeping every patient comfortable and pain-free.

This is what teamwork looks like. Every member of the GamMed team, working side by side with our incredible local partners, is dedicated to delivering the best possible perioperative journey for every patient.

A historic milestone for surgery in The Gambia 🇬🇲

The GamMed orthopaedic and plastic surgical teams have successfully performed the first ever microvascular free flap procedure in the country.

Our patient, a 17-year-old with a 7-week-old open fracture and a devastating 15cm bone loss, faced only two options: limb salvage with a free flap or amputation.

Through a remarkable multidisciplinary effort:
• A bone transport frame was applied by the orthopaedic team
• A free flap was transferred from the right leg
• Microvascular anastomosis was performed to restore circulation in the left leg

Despite significant anaesthetic limitations, the entire 8-hour operation was safely completed under regional anaesthesia. The patient required 4 units of blood and showed incredible resilience throughout.

This was a long and demanding day for both patient and team — but we are pleased to share that she is comfortable this morning and recovering well on the ward.

This achievement represents not only limb salvage for one patient, but a major step forward for surgical capability in The Gambia.

Back in theatre and straight into action 🇬🇲🇬🇧

Following an incredibly hectic clinic yesterday, today marked our first day back in the operating theatre in Ndemban at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital.

It was fantastic to reconnect with our local colleagues and get straight into a busy week of surgery. Despite a major challenge with missing luggage containing essential equipment, the team adapted quickly—finding solutions on the ground and ensuring that no patient’s surgery had to be cancelled or postponed.

With a huge volume of work ahead, every minute in theatre counts. Today we ran two theatres simultaneously—one dedicated to adult orthopaedics, while our paediatric and plastic surgery teams combined efforts to tackle complex cases. We also made use of treatment rooms to maximise efficiency, and later expanded into a third theatre once emergency cases were completed by the local team.

By the end of the day, we had successfully completed 9 cases—a strong and encouraging start to the week 👏🏽

To top it off, our delayed luggage finally arrived this evening, allowing the team to regroup, refresh, and begin unpacking hundreds of kilograms of essential equipment in preparation for the days ahead.

A huge team effort all round—onwards to tomorrow! 🌍✨

Today marked GamMed’s first day back in The Gambia 🇬🇲 — and what a day it has been.

We held an incredibly busy clinic, reviewing patients from previous outreach trips alongside an overwhelming number of new, complex cases. The scale of need is as evident as ever.

Our team saw:
🔹 51 patients by our paediatric orthopaedic consultant
🔹 41 patients by our adult orthopaedic consultant
🔹 38 patients by our plastic surgery team

The complexity of the cases ahead means we are preparing for an intense and demanding week of surgery.

However, the last 24 hours also brought an unexpected challenge. Despite arriving safely, all of our essential equipment — including surgical instruments, PPE, dressings, anaesthetic supplies, and post-operative medications — remains stranded at the airport in London.

But if there’s one thing that defines this team, it’s resilience. We adapt, we problem-solve, and we keep moving forward to ensure this trip delivers the care our patients need 🇬🇲

In just a few days, GamMed will be returning to The Gambia for our 11th surgical outreach trip 🇬🇲

We’re honoured to once again join our friends and colleagues at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, continuing a partnership that means so much to all of us.

Our week will begin with clinic on Sunday, followed by a full schedule of back-to-back operating, post-operative care, physiotherapy, and a wide range of teaching and training alongside the incredible local team.

Our suitcases are packed to bursting with essential supplies — medical equipment, surgical instruments, anaesthetic materials, wound care packs, and so much more — all ready to support the work ahead.

We can’t wait to get started 🇬🇲🇬🇧
