A special feature of the asana system of Krishnamacharya was vinyasa. Many yoga students today are no doubt familiar with this word—it is increasingly used now, often to describe the “style” of a yoga class, as in “hatha vinyasa” or “vinyasa flow.” Vinyasa is essential, and probably unique, to Krishnamacharya’s teachings.

The vinyasa method of practice transforms yoga from a static exercise to a dynamic one. Without vinyasa, yoga chiefly involves staying in certain body positions for a number of seconds or even minutes. Add vinyasa and it becomes a flowing exercise, integrating movement with breathing.

However, a good asana practice also incorporates staying in position for several breaths in selected asanas. Physical and mental benefits accrue from long, deep breathing while holding certain positions.

If you are also practicing pranayama (and pranayama should generally be done after asanas), you may find it useful to end your asana practice with staying in asanas or with slow movements and long breathing. This will help to smoothly transition from asana to pranayama.

We perceive objects through our senses. The instruments that make perception possible are our sense organs: eyes, ears, tongue, nose and skin. They convey these sensations to the mind. Based on these and the memory of past experiences stored in it, the mind continuously generates thoughts and feelings.

These thoughts and feelings are the basis for our actions. The body is the vehicle that translates the thoughts of the mind into physical action. Finally, our actions themselves are usually directed towards feeding a particular input to the senses.

This forms a cycle of sensory input, mental processing and thought or action usually directed towards the attainment or avoidance of further sensory input of some sort.

This cycle operates ceaselessly in all of us, all through our waking hours. The mind forms the central player in this cycle, as it determines what action to take. This will in turn determine what sensation will be available to our senses. Therefore, both our senses and the body are under the control of the mind.

The spine has four curvatures, three (cervical, thoracic and lumbar) of which change with body movement and breathing. Of these four curvatures, the sacral curvature is fixed because the sacral vertebrae are fused. To maintain the strength and flexibility of your spine, you must maintain its curvatures.

The curvatures of the spine tend to increase with age. This change in the shape of the spine is due to the continued influence of gravity and progressive decline in muscle strength and tone, accelerated by decreased use of some muscle groups.

Asana practice helps to maintain the curvatures of the spine. Asana practice, using appropriate movements and breathing, can prevent or offset this tendency of the spine to slump with aging. The aim is to prevent the spinal curvatures from increasing to more than the ideal

When evaluating or designing any asana practice, we must consider the effect it has on the spine. If we disregard this important consideration, it is easy to arrive at a practice that may increase both structural and functional imbalance.
