Sibling Link

Sibling Link A Brighton based peer support group for adults who have, or have had a brother or sister living with mental illness.

We are are friends whose mission is to help end the stigma surrounding mental health. Having supported each other when our brothers Ali and Dan were living with their mental illness, we know first hand how powerful peer support is. Our aim is to create a safe space and environment within which you can share your story and experience.

Hello everyone,

We are writing to you all as a courtesy - because you’ve all been so important to us and because you have been the heart of what Sibling Link is all about - community.

With trepidation, much pride and enormous gratitude, we are writing to let you all know that Sibling Link is coming to a gentle end.

It’s been about 8 years since we talked about creating the space for others, that we had for each other - and we did it!

We hope that by having attended these meetings, you know that you’re not alone in your journey as a worried sibling or bereaved loved one.

Thanks to (hundreds!) you all for showing up with your vulnerabilities, sharing your innermost thoughts and authentic snapshots of a life filled with love, frustration, deep sadness and more… for your loved one - and for the life changing and genuine openness about how this part of your lives is affecting your own wellbeing.

Thanks to our brothers - Alistair and Danny, we were given the energy and impetus to seek and support others who knew our story, and who are still living their story.

We know you and we hear you.

We’ll be keeping the socials () and website going for a few months, signposting to other organisations - so do keep an eye on our website.

We will be also be responding to emails for a while, so do stay in touch if you wish to.

The first Thursday in May 2024 will be the last zoom meeting for siblings and the first Sunday in May will be the last Walk & Talk Bereaved by Su***de meeting. We will have our final in person meeting on Thursday 9th May 2024. We will send out reminders for these meetings, as usual.

Tash & Bex

Sibling Link’s aim is to keep the conversation about mental health going in the hope that stigma surrounding our mental health completely disappears.

Connection community survival hope - that’s what we do for our community who have been ***de.

It was great to meet you in the last night, plus all the other amazing organisations there for you.

Set up in 2016, Sibling Link's aim is to create community and lessen the isolation su***de and mental illness can cause. We had both needed to talk about what our own brothers had been through, and the impact that had on us. So we wanted to create a safe space for others to do the same. We run this service for free and of no cost to you.

Great show beautiful poetry and amazing to hear your story and

The Baton of Hope is the UK’s biggest ever su***de prevention initiative, and is today making it's way to Downing Street.

17 people dying by su***de every day in the UK is 17 too many. These numbers haven’t changed for years, and it’s time for change.

We never underestimate the courage it takes to show up to a peer support group and make yourself vulnerable by talking about grief. Thankyou for the lovely coffee Hove Park Cafe But most of all, thankyou for the support you all gave to each other this morning. Our next meeting will be in September.

THE POTTERY PROJECT will be offering those bereaved by su***de the opportunity to create a piece in clay and use the power of pottery to connect and heal with others who are living with, and totally understand this brutal kind of grief.

If you have been impacted by a loss by su***de and would like to join – we have limited spaces available starting in September.

Please email info@siblinglink.co.uk for more details.

Following the tragedy of a su***de, our aim is to help people feel less isolated and more connected, with what is an extremely complex and painful issue.

On our walk the ability to talk about the loss can be part of a normal conversation.

We have seen that in time, this process can make it easier for people to continue the conversation with others in their lives.

Have you been impacted by a loss by su***de? We are here for you.

Our next walk and talk for those bereaved in this way is this Sunday 3rd July. We are meeting at the café in Hove Park at 10am.

Please email info@siblinglink.co.uk if you'd like to join.

Sibling Link’s aim is to keep the conversation about mental health going in the hope that stigma surrounding our mental health completely disappears.

Will Young: Losing my Twin. The documentary explores the death of his brother, who died by su***de in 2020 aged 41. Rupert Young had battled alcoholism for over 20 years.

Rita Daniels, Commissioning Editor for Channel 4 said: “We are very thankful to Will and his family for opening up about the sensitive and difficult topic of addiction and we hope Will’s profound tribute to his brother will go a long way to helping those going through similar issues.”

Helpful organisations for anyone who has experienced similar issues:

We run a bereaved by su***de group based in Brighton and Hove. And also a support group for siblings of those going through mental health issues in Sussex and online. Visit our website www.siblinglink.co.uk or email info@siblinglink.co.uk

This is Lou. Tomorrow she will be running the Brighton marathon in our name.
"I was bereaved by su***de at a very young age and I have benefitted hugely from Sibling Link. I have not written my story here but my experience is reflected in the article by Aisling Bea for the Guardian a few years ago and her writing sums up some of my own thoughts and feelings. Sibling Link is a unique environment that provides a space to talk with others who understand this very particular experience'.

We will be cheering you on Lou! Her donate page link is in our story or here https://www.peoplesfundraising.com/fundraising/louise-s-brighton-marathon-fundraising-page
