Thrilling walk today with David from Wild Starts. Welldone everyone who made it up for the early start 👏🌅🤗
We were treated to a cacophony of birdsong; white throat, black cap, dunnock, robin, wren, sky lark, and more!
So much great info from David about fascinating bird behaviour too.

As our walk came to an end we saw a grey heron fly overhead and for the first time for many of us locals, we saw mallards 🦆 in the dew pond, a male and female!

Hoping to hold another event in Sheepcote valley in late August/early September.

Join Hannah from Wild Walks and birding expert David from Wildstarts who will help us pick out each bird species, explaining practical ways for participants to recognise them in the future. We'll touch on various approaches, including analysing pitch, duration, volume, and pattern, as well as using imagery and verbal mnemonics for easier identification.

Our Tree Festival 2026 programme is now open and live for bookings!

And our Festival's photo competition, I Love This Tree Because, is open for submissions! 📸

We have a fantastic selection of events, taking place in May and June. Highlights include a family-friendly talk and walk with renowned Sussex naturalist Michael Blencowe, a Forest School taster session in Steyning and our Tribute to the Trees event in Preston Park, Brighton.

This year’s programme includes an array of guided walks, storytelling and creative workshops. There will also be exhibitions at Worthing Museum and Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

'What is the Dawn Chorus?'

The dawn chorus is the symphony of song performed by birds looking for love, and to defend their patch. In spring, as the days lengthen, wildlife starts to think about the need to breed. For many male birds, this means belting out the well-worn but wonderful classics to try and attract females.

Some species sing throughout the day, but it’s at dawn, as the morning light begins to break, that many different birds join together to perform.
