Martlets Hospice

Martlets Hospice Martlets is a local charity that provides terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove, and surrounding areas, with the very best care and support.

Our expert team helps patients live life to the full during the precious time they have left. Martlets opened in 1997. The staff and services were formed from the merger of three separate charities: Coppercliff Hospice, Tarner and MacMillan Day Hospice. Across the hospice services, more than 25,000 local people have been supported and cared for since 1997. Most people receive care from us in their own homes. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities. Others choose to spend their final days here, or to join us as inpatients for respite care or symptom management. Thank you for your generous support – it enables us to provide exceptional care that changes lives.

Counselling can offer an emotional lifeline to so many patients at different stages of their journey.

These services are often expensive and over-subscribed when not provided by hospices.

We want to continue to support patients with these vital services. Patients like Marc.

We’re here for you. Will you be here for us this winter?

Hospices nationwide are facing a funding crisis, and there is growing demand for these essential services. With seasonal pressures on our healthcare system too, there are lots of reasons to get behind your local hospice and make sure it is still there in years to come:

Reason #4

“One in four people in the UK who need hospice care can’t access it. Government funding is not keeping pace with rising costs and with growing demand for services hospices are having to make difficult decisions about who they treat. It’s a sobering thought, but one day it might be you, a family member, or a neighbour or friend who needs Martlets. Without the support of our local community – who provide the majority of our income through fundraising – we could not keep on caring.”

Tom’s wife Penny spent her last weeks on Martlets’ inpatient ward and the couple got married in our Sanctuary. In our latest blog, Tom talks about the vital care he and Penny received from Martlets:

“Going through that experience with Penny was so eye-opening in understanding the depth of care and understanding hospices provide – not just to patients but to families too. Everyone we met at Martlets was so kind and they treated Penny like a human being, not just a patient.”

Marc is supporting our joint-hospice appeal this winter: “We’re here for you. Will you be here for us?”

“Martlets can only provide hospice care thanks to the support of the local community – because there isn’t enough funding from the government. It frightens me to think that without that support we wouldn’t have a hospice.

Before my diagnosis I was fit and healthy and I never thought cancer would happen to me. It’s a sobering thought, but one day it might be you or someone you love that needs hospice care and I want Martlets to be here for everyone who needs them. So please, if you can, consider making a donation to Martlets so the hospice can keep providing its vital care for families, not just for the now but into the future.”

When people think of hospice care, they may think of it as a last resort, or that the care is just for those at the end of their lives.

But our staff are at the heart of the local community, visiting people at home and supporting them to live their lives with the time they have. Patients like Marc.

Jaki is a Martlets patient who has motor neurone disease (MND).

She has produced a collection of poems, written entirely through the use of eye-tracking software, that explore the daily challenges of living with MND.

Her poem ‘Hospital’ speaks of the contrast between her experience in hospital and then staying on Martlets’ inpatient ward.

Visit www.lifewithmnd.com/poems/hospital to hear the poem read by Jess, a sister on our nursing team who has been caring for Jaki. (Please note, the poem contains graphic medical content).

Jaki says: “These poems have allowed me to share my experiences, thoughts, and feelings through verse; trying to find hope and something to smile about each day, despite the brutal challenges of this cruel condition.”

This week is Grief Awareness Week which aims to raise awareness of grief, normalise conversations about it, and highlight the support available to those who are grieving.

Sarah Bell, chaplain at our sister hospice St Barnabas House in Worthing, shares 10 ways to cherish the memory of a loved one during the Christmas season, including:

❤ Keepsakes can be very important. Some people spend years collecting beautiful Christmas decorations and getting them out to put on the tree brings back memories of the times you shared. Similarly, it might be a good time to look through your memory box, if you have one.

Our patient and family services team recently held a memorial event at the Bishop Hannington Church hall in Hove. Family and friends in our Martlets community who had been bereaved during the year were invited to attend.

Jojo Gosney, our counselling and bereavement services manager said:

“It was a really moving time of poetry, music and readings. People placed an item or photo on a special table and lit a candle in memory of their loved one. There were tears and laughter and I felt we created a small community for the bereaved to come together.”

We also hold regular Grief Cafes for our Martlets community. If you’re over 18 and have a loved one who has died under our care, you are welcome to come along in Hove or Saltdean. It can be helpful to know you are part of a community of others who have become bereaved and are finding their way back into life again.

This week is Grief Awareness Week which aims to raise awareness of grief, normalise conversations about it, and highlight the support available to those who are grieving.

We’re here for you this Christmas.

For those who have lost a loved one, Christmas can be a difficult time. Sarah Bell, chaplain at our sister hospice St Barnabas House in Worthing, shares some thoughts on coping with grief at this poignant time of year:

💙 Keep honouring your loved one with past rituals, new routines and small dedications

💙 If you feel up to it, you could reach out and help others. This has the added benefit of making you feel useful, as well as offering a powerful distraction.

💙 Remember that your grief will change and evolve. There will be other Christmases, so don’t feel under pressure to make this one great.
