Balasana (child's pose) can be a restorative yoga pose that offers several physical benefits, including:

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈRelieves stress and tension
πŸ’›Stretches the hips, thighs, and ankles
🌞Lengthens the spine and opens the shoulders
🫢Improves digestion and relieves constipation
🌝Helps to calm the mind and promote relaxation.

Balasana also offers us an opportunity to pause and observe our inward experience, whether that be during a more active practice as a resting posture, before we begin or at the end of practice.

Today we focused on waking up the prana in our hips and shoulders. As usual the approach was easy going but with lots of power. Lots of squeezing in the legs to the chest then a full body release (flop to the floor) we included active yawning (to pump blood to the heart and increase heart rate) and lots of laughs and a few serious moments as we took out legs above our heads in wide legged tripod stand.

The end result a room full of happy yogis resting in their prana heightened state!!

Dancer pose can leave us feeling grounded, expressive, wobbly or darn right annoyed. It is, in our book a rather 'big' pose and physically it requires a synthesis of all kinds of stuff! It's a backend AND a balance!

Aint no two ways about it, Natarajasana is a pose that requires our focus and a fair bit of it. So to help us become more grounded and steady we can use our Dristi (our focus, where our eyes look) to help us find a soft yet steady balance.

Look past the tip of your nose at something that isn't moving and breathe as easy as you can. Find that balance between strength and softness to the best of your ability.

And if Dancer isn't your pose, try the same trick with your Dristi in any posture, balancing or not, and notice what happens.

We still have a few spaces for tomorrow's practice! Join us for a powerful practice using our voices, movement and deep rest enveloped in sound, to tap into our personal power.

Each class begins with a series of warmups to open up the throat and heart chakras; along with gentle warming and stretching exercises to prepare the body. We will then begin to sing alongside live musical accompaniment. The live music helps us to relax and let go, and lose ourselves in the beautiful Mantras. These classes can be incredibly moving, as we become enveloped in the sound created by the group, energising, releasing and connecting deeply with our hearts.

The live mantra singing is always optional and you are welcome to listen and absorb the energy from others. After the mantra singing you are invited to lie down, Using a selection of instruments you will be guided on a journey of sound reconnecting you to your heart, bringing awareness to your body and allowing the vibrational energy to wash over you bringing harmony and balance.

We love incorporating sound into our classes here at Humankind!

The vibrations made by instruments as well as those made by our voices (and even by our breath!) can help us feel safer in our bodies and more connected to each other.

We are all vibrating all the time at different frequencies - when we unify via sound, we bring ourselves onto the same frequency which is what can help us feel the truth; that we are all connected by this wondrous experience of being alive.

Sound is another tool the Yoga practice has gifted us to help us feel more purposeful, joyful, loving and connected πŸ•‰πŸ’›πŸŒž This is our invitation to you, to use this tool as often as you can! Sing! Chant! Hum! Pick up your university guitar! Celebrate = vibrate 😜

Check out our website to see when our next sound-integrated classes and events are to be held!

You possess one of the most powerful tools for creating change and healing from within; your unique vocal expression, your voice!

Learning to connect with your voice and understanding its life-affirming potential, gives you a tool that is accessible and powerful in its own right.

Happy Spring Equinox to our whole Humankind crew! As we jump into Spring we can ask ourselves what freshly budding shoots might we be nurturing? Where can we give more care to tend to new relationships; Behaviours; Habits; Thought patterns etc.

The best bit of news about Spring? The clocks change this weekend meaning the sunset will be after 7pm until mid-September! But...you will lose an hour's sleep so if you're joining us for class on Sunday, remember to change those clocks (if you still use an analogue one 😜)

A regular practice doesn't have to look like the same every day!

Some days we might practice for a 90 minutes and visit Pranayama, Meditation and Asana. Other days we might take 5 minutes to centre ourselves with breath before a meeting.

Give yourself the grace to know that progression of practice doesn't have to look or feel the same every single day!

Props are sometimes resisted as they're assumed to be an 'easier' or restorative option (A types, we see you 😜 ), however, props can be used in a multitude of ways to actually further our active practice.

Props can elevate the floor and make our arms longer, create resistance, and bring more ease and spaciousness to how our bodies meet the earth!

What is your relationship like with props? Why not have a block close by next time you practice and reach for it where you wouldn't usually. You might discover something new!

Ustrasana (Camel Pose) is a forward-facing backbend and ( as you can see ) comes in many varieties and can look totally different from one body to the next. It's important to remember to prioritise your breath here and experiment with a soft approach. Only go as far as the breath leads you - if the breath becomes strained, back off a little or a lot.

A beautiful and useful quote to remember in our backends is"Strong back, soft front, wild heart." - Brene Brown.

What this pose requires to hold you in both Sthira (strength) and Sukha (softness) is a balance of strong back body muscles with softer front body muscles. The back body holds us against gravity whilst the tissues of our front need to soften and melt away from the heart to allow this trustful opening in our heart space - both energetically and physically.

So if you're finding backends challenging, work on both the strengthening and the softening to help you find that balance & allow your wild heart to sing πŸ¦πŸ’›πŸ•‰
