When thinking of starting a business in Health and social care one should decide the regulated activity they want. For example, the following are regarded as seperate regulated acitivities.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) considers “supported living” and “extra care” as separate service types. If they carry out a regulated activity such as “personal care” within their remit, such organisations must by law seek registration with the CQC.
In both supported living schemes and extra care schemes, because the arrangements made in respect of a person’s accommodation is separate from the care elements, these services are not classed or registered as care homes, where the accommodation and the care and support are registered as an entity. CQC will not inspect the accommodation, only the services provided under the definition of personal care.
Once registered to carry out regulated activity, the service provider must achieve all the applicable fundamental standards and will be inspected against the following five key questions.
1. Is it safe?
2. Is it effective?
3. Is it caring?
4. Is it responsive?
5. Is it well-led?
This topic, which provides a general overview of these sectors of adult social care provision, should be read with those on Learning Disabilities, Supporting People with Autism, and the Mental Health topics

Supported Living
Both “supported living” and “extra care” describe types of care and care environments, in which can be found the provision of both unregulated as well as regulated support services. Supported living usually refers to the arrangements for younger adults with disabilities, mental ill health and social impairments who require accommodation and some level of care and/or support. It can apply to a wide range of people who need both accommodation and support including:
• people who have been homeless or sleeping rough
• ex-offenders and people at risk of offending and imprisonment
• people with a physical or sensory disability
• people who have suffered from or are at risk of domestic violence
• people with alcohol and drug problems
• people with mental ill-health, who might need accommodation and support either/both to:
o prevent admission to hospital and
o after leaving hospital
• vulnerable older people
• vulnerable young people making the transition from childhood to adulthood
• people with HIV and Aids
• people with learning difficulties and autism
• homeless families with support needs.
Extra Care
“Extra care” usually refers to schemes for older people that integrate accommodation and some level of care or support in their contractual arrangements.

Domiciliary care, extra care and supported living
The CQC lists extra care housing services and supported living services as separate service types. It registers providers of care under either term as subject to the requirements relating to providers of personal care for people in their own homes, ie domiciliary care.
There are some fairly small distinctions between extra care, supported living and domiciliary care services.
The three types of care can be compared as follows.
• Domiciliary care: personal care for people living in their own home, which may vary between 24-hour provision and occasional timed visits, consists of packages of care designed to meet individual circumstances and can involve a variety of personal support tasks.
• Extra care housing services: domiciliary care services provided to usually older people living in their own homes as tenants or owners, which are usually part of a group of flats or houses linked into a scheme, often but not invariably purpose-built, where some services and facilities are shared.
• Supported living services: domiciliary care, including personal care and social support provided to people living in their own homes as tenants or owners, which might be in one location or scattered across an area, who might need regular, continuous or near-continuous care tailored to their particular needs.
