· Discover a Safer and Easier Labour with Peanut Balls
In the evolving landscape of childbirth practices, the use of a peanut ball during labour has emerged as a promising strategy to support better outcomes for both mothers and babies. This non-pharmacological intervention is grounded in the biomechanics of childbirth, aiming to facilitate the baby's rotation and descent through the pelvis by optimising maternal posture and movement. The importance of adopting comfortable positions during labour cannot be overstated, and evidence supports that such practices are not detrimental to labour progress. The use of peanut balls has been particularly beneficial for labouring women who have received an epidural, as it helps in maintaining an effective peliatropic posture without compromising the safety of mother and child.
How They Work
The peanut ball, distinct from the conventional birthing ball, is specifically designed to assist during labour by facilitating the baby's movement through the birthing canal. This tool, shaped to fit between a woman's legs, allows for various positions such as lateral, supine, or sitting, which are crucial for increasing pelvic dimensions and promoting fetal rotation and descent during the second stage of labour, and also due to their unique shape are excellent for leaning on.
Scientific Studies and Evidence
Extensive research underscores the effectiveness of the peanut ball in reducing labour complications. Studies have documented a decrease in the length of labour and cesarean birth rates among women using the peanut ball.
For instance, a randomized controlled trial highlighted that the use of a peanut ball reduced the second stage of labour by an average of 29 minutes and decreased cesarean rates by 11% compared to control groups. These findings are supported by additional research, which also indicates a significant reduction in the first stage of labour for nulliparous women using the peanut ball.
