Someone asked me recently to explain why I do what I do. The short answer is I want to help people and always have. The longer and more complex answer is I started Chronically Consulting for 18 year old me, who had recently been diagnosed with an incurable Chronic Illness, an illness that many people did not believe existed, let alone took the time to try and understand. Now being a confident 30-something year old, I can look back and say that 18-year-old Alice was lost, angry, desperately needed support, but didn't even know what she should ask for, let alone how to do it. 18-year-old Alice didn't know her rights, didn't know about reasonable adjustments and being fairly new to the world of employment, was not prepared for the discrimination she faced. 18-Year-old Alice ended up with 3 jobs she lost or left due to discrimination, spent months unemployed and trapped between the workplace and welfare systems, not really fitting into either and struggled to see what her future could possibly look like as a Chronically Ill person.
I'm pleased to say that 7 years later, after battling her way through a degree, writing a research dissertation about Chronic Illness in the Workplace, stumbling across a few supportive managers who allowed her to practice articulating my needs and learning a lot about Employment Law, HR, The Social Model and Accessibility, 25-year-old Alice got a job in a Disability Charity as an employment advisor. Several years later, after gaining lots of skills and experience 30-Something-year-old Alice started a specialist consultancy business to help Chronically Ill people experiencing employment issues... like 18 year old Alice. I started this business because if it existed when I was 18, I would have been one of its customers.
