I’ve been working in businesses to help their people with their mental health. To promote good simple understanding of what good mental health is. This helps to foster more empathy for ourselves and then with each other.

The workshops I host use simple ideas to help people gain more knowledge of how we can cope better. When groups of people share this understanding it gives them a shared language of how to view difficulties and work together with more connection.

When people have more positivity, environments begin to change. We can start to move away from old unhelpful patterns of behaviour and become more connected, more creative, more able to cope and overcome.

How would your workplace change if there was greater reflection and resilience? If people were able to be more mindful in their work? What would start to change if people were coping better and truly felt looked after?

I’m Alex and I am a Solution Focused Therapist.

We’re all experts in our own difficulties and our own feelings. I work with people to help them have a deeper understanding of why we can get stuck in thought loops and patterns of behaviour. I’m grateful that I can share the neuroscience that underscores good mental health with all of my clients, and present workshops with groups and businesses.

Having this understanding can then help us to foster more kindness to ourselves and each other.

I help people to shine a light on their strengths and positive qualities. I help them to look at the things that would show them they’re moving toward how they’d like to be behaving, to become more like that person they want to be.

Today is World Mental Health Day . It’s a great reminder for us to take a moment to reflect on our difficulties and what we’re grateful for. To think about others in our lives and how they might be coping. A chance to check in with loved ones, friends and colleagues.

This year’s theme is around prioritising mental health in the workplace. As we spend so much of our lives in work it’s vital to look at how our experiences here can shape our mental landscape. When we practise open understanding and support around each other's struggles we can become more positive, more creative and enjoy greater connection.

A really big and important part of my life is facilitating, and taking part in, Men's circles.

A Men's circle is a regularly meeting group where Men are given the opportunity and safe space to talk freely without interuption. The circles that I have been part of encourage this experience to be one where rather than get caught up in the story of what is going on in our lives at the moment, we pay attention to what emotions are coming up and what behavioural patterns we are repeating.

These groups foster a sense of commitment and responsibility both to those in the group and also to ourselves. They also give us valuable opportunities for deeper connection, again both to those in the group and also to ourselves.

Being able to witness other men be vulnarable and accountable, to hear their difficulties and their triumphs provides a beautiful place where we reflect and see our own lives more compassionately.

There are many brothers that I've connected with in circle over the years that probably don't realise just how much they've helped me and touched my heart, so I'd like you to know if you're reading this that I'm sending love and thanks 🙏

Do you take part in a circle? Would you like to? How does it/could it help?

November is Men's Mental Health Awareness month.

During my life I have suffered with low self-esteem, procrastination, anxiety and depression. As I younger man I suffered in ignorance and silence. I didn't understand what my thoughts were about, didn't recognise my feelings and didn't feel safe to communicate with anybody about my experiences.

Today I am an experienced professional helping others with their thoughts and feelings. However, this does not mean that I have somehow evolved past experiencing difficulty! It's through awareness and understanding my thoughts that I can cope differently. It's through observing my thoughts with kindness that I hope to progress and grow. It's through trying to be more accepting of myself and all of my mistakes that I can be more present in relationships.

I am lucky enough to attend regular professional supervision, Hypnotherapy for me, Men's circles and talking groups. Being commited to my own mental health and talking about it openly has lead to so many positive changes. Not least of which have been deeper friendships and relationships 🙏
