Common mistakes made by audio transcribers.

ABBREVIATIONS, CONTRACTIONS AND EXCEPTIONS

Abbreviations come in various shapes and sizes. It's important to know when to use full stops, and when not to. The ones I encounter most often include:

Latin abbreviations

- e.g. (for example)

- i.e. (that is)

- etc. (et cetera)

Always write these in their abbreviated form, with full stops in the appropriate places. When these are followed by a comma, still include the full stop: Latin abbreviations include i.e., e.g., and etc.

Titles

If both the abbreviated title AND the full title end in the same letter, do NOT use a full stop.

- Mistress - Mrs

- Doctor - Dr

- Junior - Jr

If the abbreviated title and the full title end in different letters, use a full stop.

- Professor - Prof.

- Reverend - Rev.
