🧠 First Steps and MyoMinds:

🏋🏽‍♀️Fitness doesn’t always equal health. How does gym culture need to change to promote eating disorder prevention and recovery?

Eating disorders occur in people of all ages, genders and backgrounds, including those who are regarded by society as being extremely fit and 'healthy'. With the rise of social media and the popularity of fitness communities online, individuals are increasingly exposed to new pressures to conform to the body ideals we see online, as well as compete with the latest fitness challenges or pressured marketing language/messaging ‘to do better, be better’.

🧠🏋🏽‍♀️It is important we tackle the subject of physical activity, sports and gym culture so we can begin to understand what role it plays on influencing body perception, dissatisfaction and the risk it holds for an individual developing serious mental health difficulties.

It’s my last week at the surgery before Mat Leave starts! I wanted to stay for an extra week just so I could support the start of some very important research that orientates around better care for those with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

🧠Today, a dementia researcher come in to shadow the process of how we go about investigating, diagnosing and managing different levels of cognitive impairment in Primary Care and how this differs across the country. My diary was full of annual reviews for patients which are about 30-40mins each so very full on but super productive!

🧠The researcher’s aim for the day was to firstly understand the process/journey for an individual in primary care once impairment is suspected, and to secondly collate a patient base that are happy to contribute to research with a follow-up discussion regarding their experience in the ‘system’ thus far and how we go about providing meaningful support to improve the quality of their lives going forward.

🧠The ideal result of their follow-up with the researcher is to have a clearer understanding of how is best to approach and provide education, knowledge and support to patients and families on implementing the specific lifestyle measures we know can reduce the rate of cognitive decline in many patients at the point of mild impairment. All in all a very productive day with some important advances on the horizon!

👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️I personally believe we have an outstanding support system at the surgery for all individuals that go through the memory clinic, at all levels of impairment. I have recently learnt that not all surgeries have this type of service which seems ludicrous considering how many patients are impacted by problems relating to cognitive decline.

It’s Eating Disorder Awareness Week very soon and I am currently adding a few slides to a CPD presentation I put together for the team over at last year, covering some key factors in the current management of Eating Disorders.

CPD in the workplace, training for healthcare-professionals and educational support for schools on Eating disorders is essential for the early intervention and appropriate level of care for those suffering.

While noticing/recognising that someone may be suffering is one thing, being equipped with enough knowledge to refer and signpost appropriately is another thing, and whether or not that person goes on to receive the appropriate level of attention in a timely manner is an ENTIRELY different thing. This is seen across healthcare - not limited to EDs. I discuss the importance (and how!) we may bridge the gap to support when referral routes are not straight forward or timely - and why the sole responsibility doesn’t / cannot sit with the NHS for sustained, non-acute support.

🧠🍽️ Supporting our Young People with Eating Difficulties / Disorders - The Psychology in Schools Team/Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT)

🗣️🧑🏻‍⚕️👩🏼‍⚕️👩🏽‍🏫👨🏻‍💼The Psychology in Schools Team/NSFT prioritise bringing specialist mental health support into local communities through opening up dialogue between GPs, education, primary care/community services and specialist mental health/wellbeing services. They are committed to transformation to develop an integrated provision for children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing, and provide fantastic resources for professionals, parents and carers.

A brilliant CPD workshop this evening, lead by Dr Beth Mosley (Lead Clinical Psychologist) and designed to discuss how parents and carers can support a young person that is experiencing eating and exercise difficulties whilst highlighting the importance of their support alongside timely professional intervention.

🧠🍽️The workshop discussed the development of disordered eating patterns and eating disorders in young people and ended with a brilliant discussion around the complexities, yet importance, of supporting a loved one from a family/career perspective. The workshop explored evidence-based communication techniques and practical strategies that can be utilised by parents/carers to provide appropriate support at home, aligned with the level of intervention necessary, to help their loved one navigate healthier behaviours.

Work Christmas meal No.2!!🌲✨but this time with the GP Surgery team. Beaaaaautiful bunch ♥️

Although this is my nutrition-related FB - I actually do not do nutrition-related work at the surgery. Instead, I work 2.5 days per week as part of the Nursing Team providing Dementia Assessments/Reviews as part of the Memory Clinic and as a Phlebotomist. 🧠💉
