How well do parents understand & follow updated UK guidance on introducing food allergens like egg and peanut in early infancy?
And is this helping to prevent food allergies?

The ELYFANT study, led by Raquel Granell & Prof Matthew Ridd
is investigating.

You can almost see the London Eye peaking out from behind Prof Matthew Ridd who was delighted to be invited to the National Allergy Strategy Launch on Monday.

As a GP he sees how common and burdensome food allergy is and how many needs go unmet. As a professor of primary care he is committed to research that strives to help more people get access to the care and support they need in community settings.

To kick off National Allergy Awareness week our own Prof Matthew Ridd attended the National Allergy Strategy Launch on Monday 20 April.
In Matthew's own words:
“I’m pleased to be able to represent GPs and allied health professionals who work in primary care in the NHS. In this setting, we all see how common and burdensome allergy can be, and how many needs go unmet. Supported by research such as that funded through the NIHR, it is important that this strategy is implemented so we can diagnose and manage more patients in the community while also having access the specialist advice and care when it’s needed.”

Today is a day we have worked towards for years.

Following Benedict’s death, we promised him — and we promised ourselves — that we would fight for change so no other family would have to stand where we stood.

Today, the Department for Education has launched the statutory consultation on Supporting Children with Medical Conditions and Allergy. It delivers the core elements of Benedict’s Law and requires all schools to have: spare allergy pens in schools, allergy training for staff, clear allergy policies and Individual Healthcare Plans.

Benedict’s Law exists because of our son. It exists because of the questions we had to ask. It exists because we refused to accept that uncertainty and inconsistency were good enough.

Benedict was brave, kind and full of life. He would have hated the idea of another child being left unsafe. We are incredibly proud that his name now stands for clearer standards and stronger protection for others.

This moment belongs to all of you as well. To the families who shared your stories. To the clinicians and teachers who spoke up. To everyone who signed, wrote, supported and stood with us.

We have done this for you. For every child with allergies. For every parent who sends their child to school and hopes they will be safe.

This consultation is an important step forward — and we will continue to see it through.

Because of Benedict’s Law, change is happening.
