There is some research that suggests that following either positive or negative life circumstances, an individual returns to a base level of “happiness”. This is know as hedonic adaptation. There are different ways to work to shift the baseline and one of these is to develop the practice of gratitude. The challenge can be that this is difficult when life doesn’t feel great or we are faced with adversity, it can feel labour intensive and is a habitual shift to bring in a new behaviour…

Then I realised I have been doing this using a different method since the start of the year. I use a free app to take 1 (or sometimes more) picture a day of something simple that I have noticed, experienced, achieved… you play this through as a second a day in a video and when I watch mine through, I find it really soothing to revisit those moments that would have been forgotten. These aren’t all shiny and bright, but a reminder that those tricky moments have passed too.

So perhaps it is often about finding a method of gratitude (or noticing) that works for you… for some that may be journaling, for some having a conversation each day about the moments they want to acknowledge, for some writing things down and for me, using a picture to capture something.

Everyone should start their day like this!

Not the coffee, the cup. Drinking out of a hero cup makes me feel 💪🏼.
The story that we tell ourselves impacts on our sense of self. All too often we can lean toward the critic that can show up, the comparisons, the should’s and ought’s.

What if you practised leaning in to self-love, self-like or being your own cheerleader. It takes time, it can feel uncomfortable and vulnerable, but the work is worth it.

Give it a go today.

I saw this yesterday at a time when I needed it …

Doing things differently can take courage. Making a change, saying no to something, saying yes to something, to be self-accepting or self-loving, to meet our own needs, not just the needs of others…

All of these things can require courage and an openness to feeling vulnerable. If we wait until we feel ready (and often this is waiting for a lack of uncomfortable feelings), we can be waiting a long time.

So take that step and go hand in hand with your fear or vulnerability. Hold yourself gently.

There is a space to talk. Support yourself or your friends.

Could you do us a little favour?

If you know a man who seems a bit low, could you tell him about us?

We’re a bunch of blokes having a chat and a brew. 7pm at the Seat Unique Stadium (the Gloucestershire Cricket County Ground in Bishopston) every Monday. That’s all he needs to know.

Train rides and time to read!

This book was recommended to me and it’s such a good read, so far reading about the main relationship we have, our relationship with ourselves…

This means making space for all of the parts of our self, not selectively picking and choosing or judging which parts we like or don’t like…

Finding support whatever that may look like is so important, Mental Health Mates post shares some great Bristol support that is available

As mental health awareness week comes to a close, I wanted to do a shout out to Bristol support groups.

Connection is so important and this week focused on loneliness and bringing people together.

If Mental Health Mates is not for you, there are so many other groups available. Please just know you are not alone.

Why not drop the name of your group in the comments and share the connection.
