Episode #5 Moral Panic and Truth
The Straw Man Fallacy
Ever been in a debate with someone only for them to throw at you a version of your argument that is so ridiculous that you have to disagree? And, what's worse, for them to claim that this is evidence that the argument is over and they have won? You have just met a straw man.

Here's the podcast I mention: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08q92bc

Episode #4 Moral Panic and Truth
Availability Heuristic or I'll believe it when I see it.
We can't help being more attracted to and believe in the examples, stories and emotive content we see and hear rather than facts and figures: the reason why we're more able to believe we can win the lottery jackpot than we are understanding there's five times more risk of being hit by lightning on the way to buy your ticket.

Episode #3 Moral Panic and Truth
Confirmation Bias
What is it about human beings and the way they think and behave that makes us susceptible to moral panics? Today I'm looking at confirmation bias or 'seek and ye shall find'. Once we've aligned our beliefs and values with a 'side', we continue to read, listen and seek out information that confirms rathers than challenges them.

Moral panics have been a part of our society for a long time. The examples I've used show the key features of moral panics: a 'folk devil' or real life event, exaggerated language, fear exceeding threat, selective facts and truth and the demand to 'protect our children' from moral decline. Sound familiar?

In 1993, the UK was shocked by the horrific murder of James Bulger by two children. As the country came to terms with it, the narrative by tabloid newspapers focused on the role of the 'video nasty' Child's Play 3 that had been rented, amongst 200 other titles, by one of the fathers. Despite psychiatrists and the lead detective of the investigation both downplaying the role of the film, the tabloids created a moral panic similar to those seen before about Death Metal music and violent video games. It was harder to look at more complex social issues that included child abuse, parental neglect, bullying and poverty than it was to find a 'folk devil' to blame for the crime.

I'm teaching a course!

The course is all about embodiment and how to find balance in the relationship between body and mind. We'll explore the body/mind connection and how that feels, what beliefs and messaging we hear about bodies, how to tune into what our bodies tell us and how trauma and experience is stored in body and mind.

It's the perfect course for anyone who is a counsellor/therapist or works with clients' bodies. Anyone who finds it hard trust their 'gut' instinct or hear bodily cues like hunger or stress. Anyone who struggles to like or value their body. Or anyone who feels they spend too much time thinking and intelletualising over feeling.

This isn't chalk and talk teaching. Sessions will be interactive with things to try, wholehearted discussion and reflective activities.

And, because this is my first time teaching it, I'm offering it for half price. Just £30. The catch is that I need honest feedback from participants that will help me develop it further!

Six sessions. Every Monday from 20th October. 6.00-7.30pm. Online.

In the 1980s, amongst a wider moral 'satanic' panic in the US, the popular role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons, was linked to the suicides of young people and described as an 'occult tool that opens up young people to influence or possession by demons.' An organisation called Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons (BADD) was set up in 1983 and ran an intensive media campaign against the game. In 2010, a court upheld a ban on D&D at a correctional centre in the US.

Jon Ronson's excellent podcast series, Things Fell Apart, describes this and the wider 'satanic' panic that gripped America in the 1980s.

In the 1940s, a moral panic over graphic violence and horror content of comic books led to the creation of the Comic Codes Authority. Comics would be submitted to the Authority who would check it adhered to their code and show a seal of approval on the front cover. Now defunct, at the time comic books were blamed for promoting juvenile delinquency, deviant sexualisation and fascism.
