Happy Halloween! 🎃

Pumpkin carving is one of the most popular activities for celebrating the spooky season, but the UK alone wastes around 18,000 tonnes of perfectly edible pumpkin every year!

Instead of throwing away your pumpkin innards after carving, try turning them into a nutritious soup to reduce waste. 🥄

Make it high in protein and calcium by adding chickpeas, lentils or cream to boost your bone health.

Can lack of sleep cause osteoporosis? 🦴

A 2020 study found a strong correlation between short and interrupted sleep and an increased risk of low bone density in postmenopausal women.

You should aim for at least 7 hours of sleep a night to keep your bones healthy. Try a regular sleep routine, avoiding electronic devices for at least an hour before bed and keeping your room dark and well-ventilated to make drifting off easier.😴

Bone is a smart material 🦴

Inside your bones are thousands of cells known as Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). They can differentiate or change into a variety of cell types - including bone, cartilage, muscle, and fat cells.

What they change into is determined by how often they are stimulated. Decades of scientific research have found that MSCs respond positively to mechanical signals, such as Low-intensity Vibration (LiV).

By stimulating your cells daily with LiV, your MSCs are encouraged to become bone rather than fat. Over time, this increases your bone density and helps combat osteoporosis.

Pat was left with osteoporosis after suffering from hyperparathyroidism back in 2020. Her endocrinologist suggested that pharmaceutical intervention may be her only option due to the severity of her osteoporosis. She refused, instead focusing on finding a more natural remedy.

After scouring the internet, buying Diana Moran’s book about osteoporosis, and speaking with the Royal Osteoporosis Society, Pat discovered the Marodyne LiV device.

“My first DEXA scan was in December 2021; lumbar spine -4.6, femoral neck -4.3.

By April 2022, I was using the Marodyne LiV full-time, twice a day, morning and night. I had another DEXA scan in December 2022, which showed improvement in my bone density; lumbar spine -4.4, femoral neck -3.7.

I feel very strong now and can get in and out of the bath unaided and go on walks with my friends."

Only one week to go until World Osteoporosis Day! A day all about raising awareness of osteoporosis and its risk factors.

Understanding your osteoporosis risk can help you act preemptively before a fracture occurs.

Risk factors include:

💊 Certain medications: Steroids taken for a long time, anti-epileptic medications, and some cancer treatments can all affect your bone health.

🧬 Genetics: Your genes will influence your peak bone mass, which is a significant risk factor for the development of osteoporosis later in life. If one of your parents has easily broken a bone, you are more likely to do the same.

🍻 Smoking and alcohol intake: Smoking and drinking too much alcohol can slow down bone-building cells and decrease the amount of calcium absorbed in the body, causing your bones to weaken.

🦴 Low BMI: A low body weight often indicates less bone tissue, and you’re likely to have less fat around your hips to cushion the impact of a fall.

Over the last few years, there's been a tremendous increase in awareness and conversations surrounding menopause. Fewer people, however, are aware of the stage which comes before menopause: Perimenopause.

Perimenopause is the time leading up to your period stopping and the start of menopause. It usually occurs in your late 40s and lasts around four years.

Hormonal fluctuations during this time can cause a number of symptoms similar to those during menopause - such as hot flushes, disrupted sleep, low mood, anxiety, and brain fog. With perimenopause, symptoms can see-saw as hormone levels fluctuate.

That's why World Perimenopause Day is celebrated on the 11th of October every year, to bring attention to the importance of research, education, combating stigma and supporting those going through perimenopause.

In the run up to World Menopause Day next week, we’re busting some common HRT myths 👇

Myth No.1: HRT only delays the menopause.

HRT treats the symptoms of menopause, rather than stopping it altogether.

If your body was going to experience menopause symptoms for 8 years, and you take HRT for 6, you will probably experience 2 more years of symptoms if you stop taking HRT. So, instead of delaying symptoms, you’ve avoided them altogether.

Myth No.2: HRT causes weight gain.

Women have a tendency to gain weight as they age, but there is no evidence to suggest that HRT is at blame for this. Weight gain is likely to occur due to other factors, such as a reduction in physical activity and menopause itself.

Myth No.3: You no longer need contraception if you’re taking HRT

HRT is not a contraceptive and there is still a possibility of conception while taking it.
