"Say, Pooh, why aren't you busy?" I said.
"Because it's a nice day," said Pooh.
"Yes, but ---"
"Why ruin it?" he said.
"But you could be doing something Important," I said.
"I am, " said Pooh.
"Oh? Doing what?"
"Listening," he said.
"Listening to what?"
"To the birds. And that squirrel over there."
"What are they saying?" I asked.
"That it's a nice day," said Pooh.
"But you know that already," I said.
"Yes, but it's always good to hear that somebody else thinks so, too," he replied..

Pooh wasn’t wrong in taking time just to listen … to enjoy just being.

Let’s champion our wonderful bodies

When *Titanic* premiered in 1997, actress Kate Winslet received a barrage of criticism and insults about her weight.

It was even jokingly said that she sank the ship because she was fat.

It didn’t matter how well Kate performed in the film, how talented she was (and still is), or the dedication and effort she put into her work.

The only thing that mattered about her was her physique.

The world couldn’t bear the fact that the protagonist of a romantic movie wasn’t a size 6.

Or that she didn’t have skinny arms and thighs.

The world couldn’t tolerate that Leonardo fell in love with her.

It seemed unbelievable to them that he would notice her: *They just don’t match.*

But what was implied in that statement was that she was “too big” for him.

Imagine all the girls who watched *Titanic* that year in theaters.

Millions.

Imagine how their perceptions of their own bodies changed upon hearing those comments about Kate's.

How they observed themselves, using as a reference the gaze of a society with a clear purpose: to control women through a singular idea of beauty.

Imagine the distortion and the damage.

Because Kate wasn’t fat, not even remotely.

And even if she had been, she wouldn’t have had to apologize for not being thin.

Because being thin is not an obligation.

Because being thin won’t make you more loved.

Nor do you deserve more love just because you take up less space in the world.

Nor are you more beautiful or uglier.

Your body is a means to survive.

To hold onto a ship split in half.

Or to hug your father.

Your body is an instrument for existence.

And it’s perfect.

Because your mother gave it to you, and her mother gave it to her, and her mother before that.

Because it’s what remains of them here.

Because it allows you to stay alive.

Your body is your home on planet Earth.

Don’t speak badly about your home.

Be gentle and kind to yourself.

Never let anyone speak badly about your home or anyone else’s.

Don’t let the wolf blow your little house down.

Because you won’t have another one.

Make a fortress from your roots.

And fill it with flowers.
