Don't forget when you are out and about to sometimes stop and look around you. Just taking a moment to notice and enjoy can help slow us down and lower our stress levels a little.

What is Forest Therapy?

Also known as Forest Bathing, Nature Therapy or Shinrin Yoku, Forest therapy is the practise of connecting with nature in a mindful way allowing our senses to deepen that connection and enjoy the physical and emotional health benefits.

It can be anything from a gentle stroll in the park allowing ourselves to slow down and consciously connect to our surroundings through to a facilitated session with a therapist.

The Indirect Benefits of Nature

The power of nature’s healing is so strong that even indirect contact can have significant health benefits. Studies have shown that hospital patients with views of nature through windows heal faster and need less pain relief. Patients having access to images of nature also had noticeable benefits. A study showed that people looking at images of nature had an increase in Alpha wave activity in their brains which results in a calmer emotional state. The volatile plant compounds (phytoncides) emitted from trees can also be inhaled from essential oils. In Japan, where many of the studies on forest therapy came from, some workplaces now diffuse essential oils to help maintain better health among workers.

The Health Benefits of Nature

Studies show that connecting with nature can lower blood pressure by lowering the production of stress hormones and activating our parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging a calmer state. It has also been found to reduce anxiety and depression. Being in nature can boost our immune systems, partly from reduced stress hormones and inflammation but also from inhaling phytoncides which are emitted as a gas from trees for their own immunity but which we can inhale and benefit from. Further studies suggest that negative ions produced in the natural world by sunlight, radiation and moving air and water may activate natural killer (NK) cells and have anti-tumour effects.
