Relate Avon is looking for new Trustees

Relate Avon is a well respected, small, independent charity and part of the Relate national federation, the UK’s largest provider of relationship support.

We’re looking for one or two trustees. It’s an exciting time to join our new board as we develop and implement a new long term strategy. You will help guide the organisation as we consolidate and expand as the major local provider of relationship counselling, family counselling and s*x therapy.

We are seeking individuals who have a willingness to contribute their time, skills and independent judgement. You may have a specialism (perhaps fundraising, legal, HR, marketing and/or property management) or you may be good with organisations or people. You’ll be good at working collaboratively. As a trustee you will attend board meetings 4 to 6 times a year and may be involved in other projects.

What does a Relate Avon bursary actually mean? It means that you could get counselling at a reduced rate. You would usually be seen for 6 weeks, sometimes more. They are for anyone who is struggling with money.

One of our clients who had a bursary in 2022 said “it has been a lifeline for our relationship. The sessions were very empowering, the counsellor got us to look at how our relationship functions and move towards how we would like it to function. I loved the way he was non-directive, only offered information that would help us to see how we operate with no advice, which was brilliant.”

We want our service to be available to all. Join us in our campaign to raise money for more bursaries in these financially challenging times.

Confidentiality. We’ve always taken our clients’ confidentiality seriously – as much now as ever.

Our stance is widely accepted and supported by legislation, but back in the 1940s it was a different matter. Some counsellors were suggesting it was better to go to prison “rather than divulge any confidence made to them”.

Relate Avon, has over 70 years of experience providing counselling services to individuals, couples, and families across Bristol and Bath.

We offer face-to-face counselling and flexible fees, including financial support from our bursary, to ensure that our services are accessible to everyone.

Counselling without charges. Since the birth of Relate in the 1940s we have a long proud history of counselling for everyone regardless of financial circumstances..

Initially a free service with overheads funded through subscribers and donations. Volunteer counsellors provided their expertise and experience free of charge. As time has gone on the demands for counselling have grown. From the early ‘70s it became necessary to address the shortfall in counsellors by starting to pay them. Nowadays each Relate centre has to make difficult decisions around funding. Anything you can give helps fund counselling for someone who can’t afford to pay the full cost.

Princess Diana visits Relate Avon and “crowds lined the street to catch a glimpse.”

May 1989. During her hour’s visit she watched a simulated scene of domestic violence, gamely acted out a parent/child roleplay, and discussed relationships with a group of teenagers.

Contraception? In 1945 the Bristol branch of the Marriage Guidance Council discussed a motion from the London branch that scientific contraception, whilst serving a purpose “becomes a danger when misused to enable selfish and irresponsible people to escape the duties and disciplines of marriage and parenthood.” Not wanting to label people, the Bristol committee voted to delete the words “selfish” and “irresponsible”.

Sometimes our work is about supporting someone at the end of a relationship. “I found my Relate counselling incredibly useful in order to understand why my relationship with my ex-wife became so difficult to handle. But it also helped me realise I'd made the right decision leaving her and it also helped build my confidence back up again after the divorce. The sessions were a steady, positive influence on how I looked at everything in the months following my divorce.”

Ending a relationship is an emotionally and financially challenging time. We want our service to be available to all. This client was able to pay less because of our bursary scheme.

Counsellors at Relate Avon sometimes stay with us for very many years.

In 1986 Ilse Sinclair retired after 30 years as counsellor and s*x therapist. She helped start the Avon S*x Clinic in the 1970s. Looking back she remembered that in the ‘60s you couldn’t work for the Marriage Guidance Council if you were single or divorced – and “no s*x before marriage!” Fortunately our attitudes have changed.
